Services for Students with Disabilities
2007-08 Summary

Initiative 4: Enhance academic, student development and support services to retain students through graduation; develop innovative strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • The provision of academic accommodations is not only essential to the retention of students with disabilities, it is an ethical and legal obligation of the University to insure that all students have equal access to our programs, activities, and services regardless of disability.  In 2007-08, Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD):
    • Provided a wide range of accommodations for over 320 students with disabilities; close to 150 of these students were new to the program.
    • Served six individual deaf students in the classroom through interpreting or transcription programs at a cost of $63,644; SSD supplements University funding of these services through the Board of Regents.
    • Created a new position for a Sign Language Interpreter within the program, in part to address the significant financial impact of providing services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing student population.
    • Started a mentoring program for SSD hourly staff to further enhance the ability of these students to support professional staff and enhance the program’s ability to meet student needs.
    • Researched data management and service delivery systems toward a long-range goal of improving our department assessment procedures and other program functions; the new system is schedule to go online in August of 2008.
