Student Success Center - Program of Study Declaration

Major/ Program of Study Declaration
3 easy steps

If you are undecided on a major or a minor, and need some assistance with exploring your options, you can contact the Student Success Center at (801) 626-6752 (option 5), to schedule an appointment. If you want to explore career fields before making a decision on a major and/or minor you can also contact Career Services. Once you decide on a major, here are the steps you will want to take to officially declare it.

1 Contact your department

Contact your major department to declare your program of study. Although changing your major or minor (even more than once!) is certainly acceptable, it is in your best interest to declare it as early as possible to avoid (or at least limit) taking unnecessary classes.

Declare you major by the following University deadlines:

Bachelor's Degree 48 completed semester hours
Associate's Degree 24 completed semester hours

2 Choose your degree

Different majors have different degree options. You need to work with the department to set up a plan for the type of degree in your major. The type of degree will determine requirements (i.e., major courses and general education courses), time commitment, course credit minimums, and admission requirements.

Associate of Arts or Associate of Science (AA/AS)
Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science (BA/BS)

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BIS)
Bachelor of Music (BM)
Bachelor of Music Education (BME)

Note: AA requires Foreign Language Credit (FL 1010/ 1020)
BA requires Foreign Language Credit (FL 1010- 2020)
BS requires Scientific Inquiry (6 credit hours over and above general education requirements)

3 Understand your catalog year

Make sure you are working toward completion of the requirements under an allowable (unexpired) catalog year. Each catalog expires in 3 years for an associate’s degree and 6 years for a bachelor’s degree. In addition to declaring a degree and a major (and a minor for some students), you need to declare a catalog year. The default catalog year is usually the year you started at Weber.

If you would like to declare the associate degree in general studies as your program of study, print off and return the program of study form through one of the following methods:
