Student Success Center - Assessment and Placement Policy

Navigating WSU's Assessment and Placement Policy [PDF Brochure]

At Weber State University, we not only want to see you succeed; we want to help you achieve your goals. One of the first steps we can take together is to make sure you have the foundation you need to do well in your college-level courses.

WSU’s Assessment and Placement Policy outlines the ways we match your knowledge with appropriate math and English classes, two subjects that can often cause anxiety.

Based on whether or not you’ve taken the ACT* and the subject scores you received, you may be required to take one or more Accuplacer assessment tests. Accuplacer is an assessment tool used by more than 1,200 colleges nationwide to determine students’ knowledge and skills in math, reading and English.

Using your Accuplacer scores, we can be sure the classes you sign up for are the right fit and will get you started on the path to success.

DO I NEED TO TAKE ACCUPLACER?

You need to take the Math Accuplacer if:

  • Your ACT Math score is 22 or below or
  • Your ACT scores are over 2 years old or
  • You did not take the ACT*

You need to take the Reading Comprehension Accuplacer and the Sentence Skills Accuplacer if your ACT scores are over 2 years old or you did not take the ACT*. If you are a non-native English speaker and your English or Reading ACT is 16 or below or you did not take the ACT*, you will need to take the Reading Skills ESL Accuplacer and Language Usage ESL Accuplacer.

If you are required to take one or more Accuplacer tests, you should do so as soon as possible. If you do not take them, a registration hold will prevent you from registering for classes.

WHAT MATH AND ENGLISH COURSES AM I REQUIRED TO TAKE AND WHEN?

If you place into a class that fulfills the university’s Quantitative Literacy requirement AND into Introductory College Writing (ENGL 1010), you can register for the math and English courses required of your program of study. Check with your major advisor or the catalog information for your declared program of study to determine which Quantitative Literacy option is most appropriate for your program of study.

If you place into developmental math (Math 0950, 0990**, or 1010) and /or developmental English (English 0900 or 0955), you need to:

  1. Begin your required developmental course work within your first two semesters, and
  2. Continue in your developmental math and English course work each semester until you have completed those courses required of your program of study with grade of “C” or better

You must meet these two requirements or a registration hold will prevent you from registering for any classes. To clear the hold, you must complete the online student information session about WSU’s Assessment and Placement Policy. These restrictions do not apply to summer semester.

Non-native speakers of English who place into developmental English should contact the LEAP (Learning English for Academic Purposes) office in Elizabeth Hall room 207 or at 801-626-6028 for advisement regarding your most accurate placement.

If you are not sure into which math and/or English course you have placed, please refer to the Assessment and Placement Standards document available at weber.edu/testplacement and/or your Accuplacer test score sheet.

WHAT ARE DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES?

Developmental courses are foundational classes offered to help students learn what is needed to successfully complete WSU’s Composition and Quantitative Literacy requirements. Developmental courses (with the exception of Math 1010) are not calculated in your grade point average or graduation credits.

Students requiring developmental course work pay a developmental fee each semester until they have successfully completed their developmental courses. This fee helps pay for services which support students taking these classes.

WHAT IS TERM?

TERM (Technology Enhanced Redesign of Mathematics) is a model implemented by the Developmental Mathematics Program to help developmental math students more effectively learn using a web-based computer program. It is an Emporium model as presented by the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT). Advantages of the TERM model include increased student success, flexible hours, individualized help, interactive software, and the opportunity to work ahead to finish early.

When taking developmental math courses, you need to complete one module each week to make progress toward completing the course in one semester. To do this, you must attend your one-hour class session that is led by a Developmental Mathematics faculty member and complete your Hub (lab) requirement each week. In the Hub, Developmental Mathematics faculty and peer tutors will give you personalized help as you learn math. The additional time you need to spend each week to meet module deadlines may be at your home, in the Hub, or in any location where you have Internet access.
