Welcome to our website for the Department of Social Work and Gerontology!

Social Work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities to enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and to create societal conditions favorable to their goals. –National Association of Social Workers (1983)

Gerontology is the scientific study of the physical, psychological, social psychological, and social aspects of the aging process and the application of empirical principles to enhance the lives of older persons.  In practical terms, the gerontology major and minor will prepare you to work in the field of aging and also to gain a broad understanding of issues you will face in your own aging.
