Frequently Asked Scholarship Questions

When are applications due?

All students admitted to Weber State University are considered for scholarships.  In order to assist in scholarship decision-making it is important that you update your scholarship information by the following priority dates:

New Freshmen & Re-Admit Students February 1
Continuing Students February 1
Transfer Students February 1

Can I apply for scholarships after these dates?

Yes.  Students who apply after the initial scholarship deadline are placed on an alternate list for any awarding that may become available.  Generally alternate awarding does not occur until the Spring Semester of the academic year.

Do I have to submit ACT or SAT scores?

Yes, for New Freshmen scholarships.  These scores are not used for Admission purposes, but they are used for scholarship selection.

Can I hold my scholarship?

Yes, under certain conditions.  Once a student has attended WSU for 12 or more hours, they may request to have a scholarship held.  This request must be made through an Appeal Form.  In order to be considered for this hold a student must have completed the minimum hours required by the specific award as well as have maintained the required GPA.  Holds may be issued for medical, community service or military reasons.  Holds for work purposes, or to attend another institution will be denied.

Are scholarships renewable?

No.  Scholarships are awarded on a year-to-year basis.  Students must update their scholarship information annually.  The only exceptions are the Ann Millner Presidential Scholarships, which are initially awarded for 8 semesters.

Do I have to declare a major?

Yes and no.  Those students who have reached Junior/Senior status (60 or more semester hours by the end of Fall Semester) must have a major to be considered for academic scholarships.  Departmental scholarships are not available to other applicant categories.

How do I access my scholarship to pay tuition?

Once you have registered, as long as there are full time hours (12) on your registration and you have met the minimum GPA requirements for your particular scholarship, the scholarship is automatically deducted from your total billing at the Cashier’s Office.

Can I receive more than one scholarship?

Yes and no.  Students with multiple tuition waiver offers may combine scholarships up to the value of full instate tuition.  If the scholarship is an unrestricted scholarship, students may accept multiple offers which do not exceed the value of tuition, fees and books.

What types of classes may I take using my scholarship?

Tuition waivers are the only restricted use scholarships.  They do not waive tuition for distance learning, contract courses, credit/non credit courses, audit courses, and most Independent Study or Study Abroad programs.  Many of these are cash only programs, and tuition waivers are not accepted.  Otherwise, all other programs (Internet courses, night courses, off-campus courses) are open to scholarship usage.

What applicant category do I fall into?

New Freshmen:
Graduating High School Students; Students who have never attended college anywhere or have less than 12 semester credit hours.  Note:  Early College Students with at least 12 hours of graded credits may apply as either a New Freshman or a Continuing Student.

Continuing:
Students currently at WSU or students who have attended WSU in the past without attending another school in the meantime (Re-Admit students).

Transfer:
Students who are currently attending an accredited college or university other than WSU.  If after transferring, you enroll and complete 12 credit hours by the end of Fall Semester, you are considered a Continuing Student.
