Scholarship Application available for 2010-2011

The 2010-2011 Scholarship Application will be available September 1,2009.  To be  considered for any WSU scholarships, you must complete the Weber State University scholarship application annually. Priority deadline is January 11, 2010.  To complete the Scholarship application, go to: https://www.weber.edu/  Log into your eWeber Student Portal to gain access to WSU's student application.

 c. Fill in the fields and click the submit at the bottom of the screen

2009 APA/Clark University Workshop with Extended Summer Institute for
Master Psychology Teachers

The fifth annual APA/Clark University Workshop for High School Teachers
will be held July 12-17, 2009 at Clark University in Worcester, MA.
This year, the workshop schedule has been expanded and will include a
two-day Summer Institute for master teachers to develop TOPSS unit
lesson plans on the topics covered during the three-day workshop. Due to
limited funding, the Summer Institute is an invitation-only program that
is highly competitive and designed as a working meeting.

All interested high school psychology teachers are invited to apply to
the 2009 APA/Clark University Workshop and Summer Institute for High
School Psychology Teachers.  Workshop facilitators will include Clark
University Psychology professors and high school teachers from the APA
TOPSS.  Housing in the Clark campus dorms and materials will be provided
for all participants.  

Participants will also receive travel stipends of $100.  Application
forms and additional information about the 2009 Workshop are available
online at http://www.apa.org/ed/topss/conf_wkshop.html.   The
application deadline has been extended to May 1st!

This Workshop is sponsored by the American Psychological Foundation,
Clark University, and APA, with generous support from Lee Gurel, PhD.

Neuroscience Initiative 2008-2009 Seminar Series

Sarah Farnsworth, who will complete her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Utah in May, will present on Thursday, 1/22 at 1:15 in Smith Auditorium (Wattis Building).  Her title is, "Brain Awareness:  From Undergraduate Researcher to Graduate Neuroscientist."  Sarah will discuss getting into graduate school in neuroscience, what her experience in the University of Utah Neuroscience program has been like, and ways that you can get involved in neuroscience NOW.  Sarah will also be having lunch with student prior to the seminar, so if you are interested in meeting her for lunch, please contact Dr. Lauren Fowler at lfowler@weber.edu to have your name added to the list.  The first 9 students on the list will receive free boxed-lunches.  Contact Dr. Fowler with any questions.  More information can also be found here.

The central goal of this class is to consider psychology as a science which informs how it is practiced.  We will consider the problems and limits of pop psychology, represented by rows of unhelpful self-help books in bookstores and therapy-as-entertainment on TV. The course will help students understand the nature of and prepare for a career in scientific psychology

History and Systems in Psychology (Psy 4090)

The central goal of the class is to help students answer the question: What are the modern ideas about human nature and where did they come from?  The first part of the course we will survey contemporary ideas about the nature of human nature.  We will then travel backwards in time to find the intellectual, social, and technological innovations that lead to the emergence of these ideas.  Over the course of the semester, students will explore the historical antecedents of modern ideas that they consider interesting and critical


Moral Development: Theories & Controversies

Dr. Shaw will be teaching PSY 4900, Moral Development: Theories & Controversies Spring semester 2009.  This seminar-structured course will address questions such as: What is morality? Are moral values distinct from other values? and more.  See this flyer or Dr. Shaw for more information.

 

Department Scholarship and Tuition Waiver Application Deadline January 12!

The deadline is fast approaching! Minimum requirements are 60 Credit Hours completed and a GPA or 3.50 or above. Other criteria might be used to select recipients (having taken Psychology 3600 and 3610) depending upon the number of applicants the department receives.  You must apply by January 12, 2009 to the Scholarship Office.  If you have any further questions please talk to a faculty member about this wonderful opportunity. Apply today so you do not forget!

Halloween Carnival and Bake Sale!

Psi Chi/Psi Cho are sponsoring a Halloween Carnival and Bake Sale Friday, October 31st.  The carnival will be held from 2:00-4:00 on the third floor of the Social Science Building.  Activities include a donut eating contest, dart throwing contest, art activities and games for kids, a cake walk, and more!  There will also be a costume contest where you can win great prizes. Please join us for some family-friendly spooky fun!  More details, including pricing information, can be found on this flyer. All proceeds benefit the Psychology department clubs.  The bake sale will be held from 9:00-Noon.

I just wanted to remind you that we will be having a Psi Chi/Psi Cho meeting on Monday, October 13th at 1:00 pm in SS 376A.
It is VERY IMPORTANT that you attend this meeting because we will be discussing the Halloween Bake Sale and Carnival and figuring out who will be in charge of each activity. In order for this event to be a successful fundraiser and fun social activity, we need lots of volunteers to man the activities at the carnival as well as the bake sale and donut eating contest during the day.

Study Fatigue:

Dr. Fowler and the Psychology department interns participated for the fourth year in a research study on the effects of fatigue on professionals in the law enforcement, military and medical fields. For more information click here.

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln.

The university will be accepting 8-10 student for a one year program to study law and psychology in our program for a full year. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board for 1 year, along with a stipend for working in our law and psychology research laboratories. For more information click here.

Student Researcher Wanted:

Student Researcher wanted to lead a community based research project with elementary, middle school, and possibly high school students. Will work closely with members of Ogden City, Dr. Fowler and others. This research position could be an ongoing one that would extend up to 2 years. Matt Schmolesky is featured in an ad in Science (Vol. 314, pg. 1208, Nov. 2006) for the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Science and Technology Policy Fellowship program (click here).  Matt was a fellow in the program from 2004-2006 before coming to Weber State University.
