How do I Declare a Major?

  • Meet with your faculty advisor. (See below to find your advisor.)
  • If you are a new student or have recently transferred to WSU, call the department secretary to set up an appointment with the department chair.
  • Fill out a Program of Study Form to declare your Major or Minor.
  • You will also need to declare a minor.
  • Submit the form to the department secretary by email: psychologydept@weber.edu, by fax: 801.626.6275, or in person at SS 370.

How do I Declare a Minor?

  • Download a Program of Study Form.
  • Fill it out as completely as possible, declaring Psychology as your minor.
  • You will also need to declare a major.

How do I Transfer Psychology Courses to WSU?

  • The transfer office can help you transfer to Weber State University the credits for courses taken elsewhere. These transfer credits can count towards your degree. However, only the Chair of the Psychology Department can accept the courses and credits as counting towards your Psychology major or minor.
  • To transfer Psychology courses taken elsewhere to your major or minor, you will need to set up a meeting with the Chair by contacting the Secretary at 801.626.6247.
  • The Psychology Department accepts course credits from Psychology classes (no other departments) taken at regionally accredited universities. (To check the accreditation of schools click here.) 
  • For an explanation of accreditation click here.
  • If the university where you took your Psychology course(s) was acceptable, the Chair will determine how the credits will count towards your Psychology major or minor.
  • For the Chair to accept a course as replacing a course in the WSU Psychology curriculum, you must demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Chair that the courses are equivalent, typically by bringing in a course description or syllabus.

How do I Declare a BIS in Psychology?

  • Call 801.626.7713 to set up an appointment with the Director of the BIS Program.  The BIS Program is located in room 140 of the Student Services Building.
  • You will need to decide on your 3 areas of emphasis, one of which is Psychology.
  • Meet with each department Chair to discuss which classes are required.  Call 801.626.6247 to set up an appointment with the Psychology Department Chair.
  • Psychology 1010 will NOT count among the 18 credits you need if you counted it as a Gen Ed class.

How do I Declare a Teaching Major?

  • Download a Program of Study Form. You MUST meet with the Department Chair to go over the degree requirements before declaring your teaching major.

How do I Become an Honor Student in Psychology?

  • Enroll in the General Honors Program and complete 6 hours of Honors Courses.
  • You must maintain an overall GPA of 3.3.
  • As part of the 36 credits required to fulfill your Psychology major, you will need to complete 6 hours from Psych 4910, Senior Project. The purpose of which is to do research worthy of presenting at a professional meeting of psychologists, such as WPA or RMPA.

To change your adviser you may simply speak to the professor who you would like to be your adviser and they will be able to assist you. There are no forms to fill out to change advisers.

How do I Change Sections of the Same Course?

  • Speak with the professor of the section you would like to join.
  • If you are given permission to join the section speak with the Department Secretary for instructions on registering.

How do I Enroll in a Research Class in Psychology?

  • First and foremost you MUST find a faculty mentor willing to sponsor you.
  • This can happen in one of two ways:
    • You may have your own idea for research which a faculty member is willing to sponsor.
    • You may want to be part of a faculty member’s project. (To find out what sort of research is happening in the department read faculty profiles on this website or look at the research board outside of the Psychology Department office).
  • Your faculty mentor will discuss with you the research course in which you want to enroll. There are three courses:
    • 2800 – Meant for students with no research experience and who have yet to take Research Methods (can be taken for 1-2 credits)
    • 4800 – Meant for students who are interested in Research and who have taken Research Methods (can be taken for 2-3 credits)
    • 4910 – Meant for students who would like to complete a senior thesis (must be taken for 6 credits, typically over two semesters).
  • You and your faculty mentor will also discuss the credit hours and details of the work expectation of the course.
  • Upon agreement, there will be a form to complete which will serve as a contract between you and the faculty member regarding the course.
  • Complete the form with your faculty mentor, and then give it to the Department Secretary. She will give you instructions on registering for the course.

How do I Enroll in Directed Readings in Psychology?

  • First and foremost you MUST find a faculty mentor to sponsor your topic.
  • This can happen in one of two ways:
    • You may have your own idea for a reading topic which a faculty mentor is willing to sponsor.
    • You may want to have a faculty mentor specify a reading topic for you.
  • Your faculty mentor will discuss with you the topics and issues which you want to explore, as well as the credit hours and the work expectation of the course.
  • Upon agreement there will be a form to complete which will serve as a contract between you and the faculty member regarding the reading course.
  • Complete the form with your faculty mentor, and then give it to the Department Secretary. She will give you instructions on registering for the course.

How do I Enroll in Psychology Practicum?

  • Check with Dr. Theresa Kay for Practicum Deadlines for Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Fill out an Application for Practicum.
  • Your application will be reviewed by the Practicum Committee.
  • Students whose applications are sufficiently strong will be called in for an interview with members of the Practicum Committee.
  • Practicum supervisors will call students with information about their status before the end of the semester.

How do I Enroll in Co-op Work Experience?

  • You must meet with the Department Chair to receive clearance for this course.
  • In the meeting you will be asked to explain the duties of your job in order to see if it is related to Psychology.
  • If the Department Chair grants you clearance the Department Secretary will give you instructions on registering for the course.

How do I Prepare to Graduate?

  • Check with Graduation for information about application fees and deadlines.
  • You must be cleared as a Psychology major or minor before you can graduate. The department recommends that you seek clearance the semester before you apply for graduation.
  • Clearing a Minor in Psychology:
    • Contact the Department Secretary at 801.626.6247 or in room 370 of the SS building for clearance.
  • Clearing a Major, Teaching Major, or a Teaching Minor in Psychology:
    • Contact the Department Secretary at 801.626.6247 or in room 370 of the SS building and ask for an appointment with the department chair for a graduation evaluation.
    • She will ask for your W#, so please have it handy.
    • The appointments are approximately 15 minutes.
