Students looking to pursue post-graduate degrees in medicine, whether a doctorate in medicine (MD) or a degree in osteopathic medicine (DO), need to prepare right away to be ready for acceptance into medical school.
The following are courses that can be taken now, at WSU, that are required or recommended for medical school acceptance.
Required courses
English - One year required
English 1010 (3), Introduction to Writing
English 2010 (3), Intermediate Writing
*If student has AP credit for English 1010, take English 2010 and English 2100 (3), Technical Writing.
Mathematics - One year required
Math 1050 (4), College Algebra
Math 1060 (4) Trigonometry (Trig is a pre-requisite for Physics 2010)
*Any additional or higher level of Math completed will make students more competitive in the medical school application process and is highly recommended.
Biological Sciences - One year required
One year is required by most medical schools. However, there is flexibility in that this requirement is fulfilled with the courses taken for science majors in such programs as:
Zoology
Zoology 1110 and 1120 (8), Principles of Zoology I & II
Microbiology
Microbiology LS 2054 (4), Principles of Microbiology
Microbiology 3254 (4), Immunology.
Physics - One year required
Physics 2010 (5) General Physics I with Lab
Physics 2020 (5) General Physics II with Lab
OR a more competitive route due to the Math requirements
Physics 2210 (5) Physics for Scientists and Engineers I with Lab (co-req. is Math 1210 Calc I)
Physics 2220 (5) Physics for Scientists and Engineers II with Lab (co-req is Math 1220 CalcII)
Chemistry - Two years required (lectures and labs); one year of principles of chemistry and one year of organic chemistry. (Pre-req. is H.S. Chemistry or CHEM 1200 not 1010)
Chemistry 1210 (5), Principles of Chemistry I
Chemistry 1220 (5), Principles of Chemistry II
Chemistry 2310 (5), Organic Chemistry I
Chemistry 2320 (5), Organic Chemistry II
