Scholarships & Fellowships

The following scholarships and fellowships are available to students in the Department of Physics.

Outstanding Physics Graduate

Each year the Physics Department selects the outstanding graduating senior student. The name of the selected student(s) will be placed on a plaque on display in the Physics Department. The recipient shall be a senior graduating in the current year with an outstanding performance in physics courses and other activities.

Physics Teaching Recognition

Special recognition is given each year to those students who are completing majors in Physics Teaching. The Department recognizes the great importance of quality teaching in the secondary schools.

Jim Bateman Scholarship

Mr. Bateman has provided this scholarship to support those students who show promise as physics majors. The award is usually given to those students who will be either juniors or seniors at the time the award is in effect.

The Pope M. & Grace C. Burkhart Undergraduate Research Fellowship

This fellowship honors the grandparents of Dr. F. Ann Millner.  This fellowship is awarded annually on a competitive basis to a student wishing to pursue a summer research project in collaboration with a faculty member in the Department of Physics.  The fellowship provides a $2000 summer salary (plus benefits) to support the student during the time of the project.

Mary Margaret Clarke Scholarship

This award is provided by Dr. Robert Clarke, a former faculty member of the Physics Department, in memory of his daughter who was a student at WSU, and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Clarke. This scholarship is aimed at physics freshmen or sophomores who have demonstrated promising performance in their course work and departmental activities.

Dr. J. Ronald and Cheryl M. Galli Scholarship

Dr. Galli has been a member of the Physics Department since 1963, and has served as its Chair on two occasions; 1964–1970 and 1983–1994. Since 1994, Dr. Galli has served as Dean of the College of Science. Normally this scholarship will be awarded for a period of two years, and will provide full funding for tuition and fees for two semesters each year. The student should be a declared physics major and preferably a sophomore at the time of application (juniors may also apply).

H. Paul Huish Scholarship

This award, a memorial to the late Professor Huish, is presented to physics majors who have demonstrated promise in their course work and departmental activities. The Huish scholarship is usually presented to juniors and seniors.

Questar Corporation Scholarship

This award is provided by the Questar Corporation and is usually given to students who will be juniors or seniors in the coming year.

Zu Cable Inc Scholarship

Zu Cable Inc generously established a scholarship fund in 2002. Junior or senior physics majors who are not concurrently receiving a full-tuition scholarship are eligible for this award.

Physics Department Activity Fellowships

The Physics Department awards a full tuition waiver to one student who is interested in working with departmental faculty on various projects, such as developing laboratory experiments or lecture demonstrations, or working with the local school districts.

Planetarium Activity Fellowships

Two full tuition waivers are awarded each year to students who wish to participate in the community and school district outreach programs that occur through the Physics Department's Ott Planetarium. Awardees are expected to help develop shows, present programs to school and community groups, and improve their knowledge of astronomy.
