Physics Program Overview

Why choose Physics at WSU?

  • Opportunities to work closely with faculty on fundamental research.
  • Access to high-quality research equipment usually reserved for students in graduate programs: research-grade lasers, an atomic-force microscope, a scanning-tunneling microscope and nuclear detectors.
  • On-campus planetarium and observatory, run by our physics majors, a strong outreach to community and schools.
  • Placement of students in top-quality graduate programs and local industries.
  • Outstanding undergraduate research paper awards at the Four Corners Sectional Meeting of the American Physical Society for the past four years

What are the employment opportunities?

WSU Physics majors are accepted into graduate schools and industrial positions, including aerospace, electronics, and software design. Their strong analytical skills are also in demand for business, medicine, and law.

Starting Salaries
In 2009, starting salaries for physics bachelor's degrees ranged from $40,000 to $65,000, depending on the position.  In 2006, the median salary for physics PhDs in industrial positions was $110,000 (Source: www.aip.org/statistics). For more information, go to Career Services, or check the latest employment data for physicists.

What will I learn in the program?

You will study phenomena, including nuclear reactions, lasers, semiconductors (the foundation of computers), and the evolution of stars and galaxies; you may even study the nature of music and the mechanics of sport. Exciting research projects may involve you with nanoscale imaging and laser optics systems.

Is there an application deadline?

Although there is no application deadline, we encourage you to apply early and register for classes. Contact the physics department for specific information or to schedule an advisement time.
