Job Openings in Physics

Weber State University is a public undergraduate institution with an enrollment of 25,000. The university is located in beautiful Ogden, UT, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, 30 minutes from world-class skiing and 40 minutes from Salt Lake City.

Being outdoors is a way of life in Ogden.  The town was rated a 'Best Town' by Outside Magazine, a 'Best Adventure Town' by National Geographic Adventure, and was featured in SKI Magazine, Skiing and the New York Times. Great hiking trails, rock climbing, bird watching, fishing, kayaking, and even sailing are all easily accessible from Ogden. But it's not all outdoor recreation; Ogden's thriving art scene has been highlighted by Smithsonian Magazine and Sunset Magazine, and the 25th Street Historic District is packed with lovely small shops, restaurants, museums and pubs.  There's also a comedy theater and a historic Egyptian theater with a world class Wurlitzer organ.

The Physics Department at Weber State University is a diverse group of physicists with a rare spirit of collegiality.  Each year, the Department pulls together to put on the Physics Open House---an event for the public that brings more than 500 people to experience the joy of physics.

Teaching students well is the primary focus of the Department's efforts, offering courses covering the wide traditional physics curriculum, as well as specialized courses for the Honors Program, summer workshops for teachers, and teacher preparation courses. Courses are currently under development in materials science, observational astrophysics, and computational physics.  Our lower division "survey" courses take advantage of both interactive demonstrations in a traditional classroom environment, as well as online formats, and the faculty in the Department experiment regularly with a variety of instructional strategies.

The Department's research facilities include an Atomic Force Microscope, a Scanning Electron Microscope, an X-ray fluorescence facility, a fully equipped optics and electronics lab, and a computation lab and a dedicated computing cluster.  Expertise in the Department ranges widely, and we seek to maintain a broad base of interests among our faculty.

Undergraduate research is a priority of the University and of the Department.  In addition to individualized research projects in materials characterization, education research, astrophysics or medical physics, several faculty collaborate within the Department and across campus in the HARBOR project, a high-altitude ballooning project that teaches students about mission design and follow through, in addition to offering a platform for many science and engineering projects.

The Ott Planetarium brings roughly 20,000 people to the campus annually, primarily in K-12 field trips.  The Planetarium also produces and distributes planetarium shows worldwide, and is internationally recognized as a leader in production for small planetariums.
