Graduate Certificate in Aerospace Management For Business

The Graduate Certificate in Aerospace Management is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish and maintain a competitive advantage through proven aerospace management practices.  Students will learn how to establish a strategic direction through efficient program and contract management, and how to maintain operational excellence through continuous process improvement.  The Graduate Certificate will help prepare well-trained aerospace managers who are in increased demand in both the government and commercial aerospace sectors.

The Graduate Certificate may be pursued as a stand-alone certificate, or as a track within the Goddard School MBA Program, and is offered in collaboration with the Utah Cluster Acceleration Partnership formed by the Utah System of Higher Education, the Department of Workforce Services, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, and Grow Utah Ventures.

COURSES

All courses are taught in our 8-week hybrid format (combining one weekly evening class meeting, 5:30-8:30pm with online instruction).  We follow the WSU semester calendar, dividing each semester into two 8-week class sessions.

MBA 6150 Operations/Supply Chain Management (3 cr. hrs.)
[2014 Spring Semester, Session I]
This course builds upon basic production and operations management knowledge to meet the needs of customers generated in today’s global market. It is designed to enhance the student’s understanding of how to analyze problems related to design, planning, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service operations. Topics include, but are not limited to, supply chain management, materials management, production planning and control, scheduling, capacity and facilities planning, manufacturing strategy, and global operations.  Prerequisite: MBA 6050 & MBA 6051, or equivalent coursework in statistics.

MBA 6370 Continuous Process Improvement & Strategy in Aerospace Management (3 cr. hrs.)
[2014 Spring Semester, Session II]

This management course is designed to teach aerospace business managers how to use the tools in Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) to attain and maintain operational excellence.  The course includes relevant CPI tools such as Lean, Six Sigman, Theory of Constraints and Benchmarking.  The course will also show managers how to conduct a stategic planning session with senior leadership and straegically align their organizations to maximize the use of CPI tools. Prerequisite: Admission to the MBA Program or approval to seek the stand-alone Graduate Certificate in Aerospace Management. 

MBA 6360 Aerospace Program Management
[2014 Summer Semester, Session I]

Within the context of the aerospace industry, students will be taught how to manage change across multiple projects using program management techniques. In organizations in which multiple strategic initiatives as well as continuous improvement projects are ongoing, understanding how to successfully plan and execute is vital.
MBA 6740 Principles of Contract Management
[2014 Summer Semester, Session II]
Students will gain an overview of the fundamentals of contract management from the development of acquisition requirements, solicitation/proposal, negotiation, contract formation, contract performance, and contract closeout. Learn the basics of what it takes to solicit, procure, negotiate and administer contracts and subcontracts while gaining a broad understanding of business principles to establish long-term relationships with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. Explore an insider's view of the roles and responsibilities of contract administrators and the various interfaces with program management and other internal disciplines. Learn how to identify the basic differences between contract types and how they are selected to mitigate risk in a contractual environment, as well as exploring the key distinctions between commercial, government and international contracting processes.

 

CERTIFICATE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For those who wish to pursue the Graduate Certificate in Contract Management for Business independently of the Goddard School MBA Program, we are now accepting applications for the 2014 cohort, which will begin during the 2014 Spring Semester, which starts Jan. 6, 2014. The following are required for admission to the certificate program:

  • Regionally-accredited bachelor’s degree in any field (original undergraduate transcripts). The minimum required for admission is a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0.  If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, admission consideration may be based on a GPA calculated based on the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate work.  The average undergraduate GPA for successful applicants is 3.4.
