SmartStartSummerBridge
SmartStart is a unique summer bridge program for
WSU. In the program's first year, 61 intentionally targeted students
participated. The target profile was first-generation and low-income
students.
In a specifically built semester that runs from early
June to early August students enroll in free credit-bearing English courses (a
possible 9 credit hours) and a math 1010 course. Besides the specially
designed calendar, these courses are structured to thoughtfully assimilate
students into the rigors of college life. This process of assimilation
balances academic rigor with support services and resources. Built into
the students' summer schedules are structured workshops and study times.
The intent is to create an introductory semester that challenges and supports,
engages and retains. Also offered is a housing option that allows
students to live on-campus without charge. This option will be reserved
for students with particular housing needs.
