Design Engineering Technology

 

Description of Degree

The Design Engineering Technology degree will prepare graduates with knowledge, problem solving ability, and hands on skills to enter careers in drafting and basic design of mechanical components, residential and commercial structures, and components. Graduates will demonstrate competency in the application of manuals, handbooks, material and/or equipment specifications, and related software in advanced drafting/design. Graduates will demonstrate competency in the application of current codes and standards with open-ended design experiences that integrate materials, manufacturing, design analysis, and graphics. Graduates will understand concepts relating to the environmental and economic impacts of design. Graduates are prepared with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to enter careers in applied mechanical design, architectural design firms, civil engineering firms, construction companies, builders, and various other firms related to the construction of our built environment using the following software programs; AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Solidworks, Inventor, Catia V5, Unigraphics (NX), PTC Creo, 3ds Max, Photoshop, and other applicable software.

Purpose of Degree

The DET degree will allow students to prepare for job opportunities in the Mechanical & Product Design industry working for aerospace, automotive, and various product manufacturing companies as well as residential design firms and builders, commercial architectural design firms and contractors; trade contractors and engineering firms such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; civil engineering firms; and various other firms related to the construction of our built environment

Program Educational Objectives

The program educational objectives of the Design Engineering Technology program are to prepare graduates to establish themselves as successful professionals in the drafting and design of mechanical systems, residential or commercial structures, or related areas during the first few years of their careers by having demonstrated their ability to:

1.    Address and solve increasingly complex technical problems related to the field of design engineering technology.

2.    Make well educated, responsible and ethical decisions that will have a positive impact on their organization and society.

3.    Undertake more complex tasks possibly leading to a supervisory role.

4.    Grow personally and professionally. 

 


Starting Salaries

Starting salaries vary depending on the region, workplace and skill level. Graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree can expect
to earn $45,000-$56,000. Associate's degree graduates can expect starting salaries of $30,000-$38,000.
