From Public Safety News, Spring 2005
A message from Interim Director of the Department of Public Safety, Brad Mortensen.

It's been a privilege of mine to work with Public Safety during this interim period. My appreciation for the dedication of the Public Safety employees and the great support they provide across the campus has grown a great deal.

Future directions for the different programs within the department have now been set. With the pending need to accommodate permanent budget reductions in the Administrative Services Division, the Director of Public Safety position will not be filled. While budget reductions in recent years have resulted in decreases in front-line services across the Division, Vice President Norm Tarbox has chosen to make this hopefully final reduction at the director's level. Programs within the Department of Public Safety will now report to other areas of Administrative Services while continuing to coordinate and work together as necessary to ensure effective service across campus. The reporting change for Parking Services moving to Financial Services was announced in December. In addition, as of April 15, 2005, Fire Marshall and Shuttle Bus will be under Facilities Management while Police, Emergency Planning, and Environmental Health and Safety will fall under Support and Auxiliary Services.

For the present, these organizational moves do not mean any immediate location moves across campus or functional changes in how programs and services are provided. In the future, changes that improve coordination, functionality, and efficiency could be considered, but will be developed in cooperation with new organizational structures and Division planning processes.

Again, my thanks and recognition go out to all the staff in the Public Safety area for their excellent service, commitment to Weber State, and support during this transition period the past four months. As we move forward without the formal Public Safety structure, continuing your commitment to the mission of your units while working to support other areas of campus to achieve their goals as well will ensure our future success.
