Forensic Science Requirements | |||

These requirements are for students concentrating in forensic science. If you are concentrating in corrections, law and justice or law enforcement, click here for requirements. Forensic Science EmphasisThose students wishing to pursue an emphasis in forensics will have the option of choosing one of two tracks:I. Forensic Science I/ Laboratory. This track is for those wishing to predominantly work in a crime lab, including chemical analysis, serology and DNA analysis. II. Forensic Science II/ Investigation. Those wishing to have a more general background and training in order to work in the field, including crime scene investigation, pattern analysis, photography and general forensics should choose this track. Core Courses Required (21 credit hours)
* Students may also take SOC, PSY, or GERT 3600 to meet the statistics requirement, but the credits will not apply toward the 45 credits required for the CJ major. As such, the student will be required to take an additional CJ elective course. ** Statistics prerequisite *** Must be senior standing (have a minimum of 90 credits) Forensic Science Laboratory RequirementsThis emphasis requires a double major in both Criminal Justice Forensic Science and in one of Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, or Microbiology. No minor is required.Emphasis (14 credit hours) [Note: CJ 2340 Scientific Crime Scene Investigation (3) is a prerequisite to CJ 4110 and will apply to the elective requirement. Also, it is strongly recommended that students complete CJ 4115 Friction Ridge Analysis (4) as a part of the elective requirement.] Forensic Science Investigation RequirementsThis emphasis requires the successful completion of all of the following 60-62 credit hours of Criminal Justice and support courses.Criminal Justice Courses (30 credit hours)
PHYS PS/SI 1010 Elementary Physics (3)
This emphasis requires the student to also complete the criminal justice core courses (21 hours) listed previously. The forensic science/investigation student does not need to complete a minor or a double major. The student also does not need to complete the additional nine credit hours of elective courses.
