General Information

12 Angry Men - Communication Skills Development Workshop
Sponsored by Goddard School of Business

Presented by Management Action Programs (MAP)

Twelve Angry Men is a 1957 classic black and white motion picture starring Henry Fonda. As a film, it stands as a dramatic tribute to the creative craft of filmmaking but as an effective communication tool, it is a virtual giant.

Twelve jurors are attempting to reach a verdict in a murder trial. Eleven agree that the defendant is guilty. One juror, Henry Fonda, believes the man is innocent and sets out to prove he's right.

What is MAP's objective in presenting this film? Together, we will analyze the critical aspects of effective communication skills to get "buy-in" to your ideas. The focus will be on:

  • Remaining objective
  • Body language
  • Open-ended questions
  • Importance of eye contact
  • Listening
  • Praising others
  • Soft sell vs. hard sell
  • Use of visual aids
  • Building consensus
  • Effective timing
  • Challenging others
  • Using word pictures

From the opening scene of the disinterested, lethargic judge, to the explosive climax, you'll find the dialog intriguing and the characters fascinating. Each brings their own "baggage" with them, which affects their ability to be rational, objective and observe the facts from a different perspective.

You will experience how Henry Fonda effectively deals with a broad spectrum of personalities:

  • Biased
  • Disrespectful
  • Open-minded
  • Sensitive
  • Loud mouth
  • Rational
  • Hostile
  • Cocky
  • Overbearing
  • Sympathetic
  • Analytical
  • Immovable

The film will make you think about what you, as a professional, are doing on a daily basis. It will challenge you to be aware of your communication style, approach, strengths, weaknesses and what impact you are having on others.
