Sports & Recreation

Maybe you’re interested in varsity athletics. Or maybe just a chance to try your hand at snowboarding. Whatever you’ve got in mind – we’ve got the facilities and programs to get you going.

Athletics
WSU’s 13 varsity teams are fierce competitors in the Big Sky Conference. The 2002 season ended with two Big Sky Conference titles in men's and women's cross country. And the facilities are tops: Stewart Stadium seats more than 17,000, and the Dee Events Center, which hosts basketball and volleyball, has hosted several rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Camps
Community youth can sign up for skill-building camps focused on soccer, baseball, football, basketball and cheerleading. For schedule information, call 801-626-8732.

Cheerleading
Our “Spirit Squad” cheers on our athletic teams – and do a good job of it.

Club Sports
You don’t have to be varsity to find great competition and fun at WSU; our 18 club sports will give you plenty to do. We’ve got everything from soccer to women’s fast pitch softball.  How good can we be? Well, WSU’s women’s softball team topped the nation in 2001!  In fact, in 2001, five of our clubs finished within the top 10 in the nation.

Fitness Activities
WSU’s Health and Physical Education Center (commonly known as the Swenson Gym) offers a range of possibilities that are open to all students when classes aren’t using the facility. Just show your Wildcard and you’ll gain entrance to state-of-the art cardio-vascular equipment, the pool, racquetball courts, weights, an indoor track, fitness training, and aerobic classes. For the gym schedule and more information call 801-626-6688.

Ice Sheet
Now renowned as the 2002 Olympic curling venue, the Ice Sheet is located on campus, north of the Dee Events Center. WSU students head for the ice rink to participate in the Hockey Club, take classes and enjoy open skating.

Intramural Sports
The love of the game – just about any game – is alive and well at WSU.  Among the intramural sports: basketball, billiards, soccer, flag football, volleyball, tennis and triathalon competition.

Wilderness Recreation Center
Housed in the Swenson Gym, WSU’s Wilderness Recreation Center makes just about every adventure possible by offering equipment rentals, outdoor skills workshops, seminars and recreational trips. Choose a snowboard one week, cross-country skis the next. To add to the fun, the WRC offers two-hour seminars, including outdoor cooking, mountain bike repair and backpacking, and one- to three-day classes on kayaking, climbing, snow shoeing and other activities.

Wildcat Lanes & Game Center
A recreation center which includes bowling, billiards,  air hockey, pinball, and video games.
