Justification for Curriculum Changes

The following changes are currently taking place in the automotive industry. 

  • Higher fuel costs.
  • Changing market shares of automobile sales.
  • Increased use of hybrid and alternate fueled vehicles.
  • Technological changes in automobiles driven by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier-2 emissions regulations.
  • Technological changes in automobiles driven by more stringent EPA fuel economy regulations.
  • Technological changes in automobiles driven by Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS).
  • An increased demand for qualified automobile technicians.

Our automotive technology program must keep up with the changing technology to serve our students, and our manufacturer and industry partnerships properly. These changes require some of our current curriculum to be deleted or updated, and new curriculum to be developed.

Additionally, some of the automobile manufacturers we have partnerships with have requested that we:

  • Increase our graduation rate 
  • Convert our programs to an eight-week block structure. 

The changes requested will allow for sufficient classroom instruction (8-weeks) followed by a hands-on internship in a dealership or independent repair facility (8-weeks).

Consequently, these requests require the further modification of our curriculum, scheduling, and program requirements.  These modifications have required us to combine multiple courses, previously individually scheduled, into one comprehensive class. This will, in effect, change the number of credit hours for each course and the time period in which it is offered.

Additionally, we will be offering an annual start of all of our AAS degree programs.  This will allow for increased annual student output from all of our programs.


The changes incorporated are summarized below:

  • All programs will now require 63 credit hours.
  • Taking all eight ASE exams and passing a minimum of four exams will be a requirement for automotive and HD truck students. 
  • Passing the EPA section 609 Air-Conditioning Certification will be a graduation requirement.
  • Passing three out of five ASE exams is required for collision repair students.
  • ASE exam test fees will be included in the course fees for each course.
  • All course titles and catalog descriptions have been updated to reflect current terminology and technology.
  • The new AUSV 1000 Introduction to Automotive Service class (3 credit hours) is a prerequisite for all classes but the electrical classes.  AUSV 2990 has been deleted.
  • New AUSV 1020, 1030, 1040, 1050, and 1060 Braking, Steering, Suspension, and Climate Control Systems courses
  • New AUSV SI1325, SI1335, SI1345, SI1355, and SI1365 Automotive Electronics, Electrical, and Body Control Systems courses
  • New AUSV 2625, 2635, 2645, 2655, and 2665 Engine Mechanical and Engine Control Systems courses
  • Technical mathematics is a prerequisite for Principles of Technology (POT).
  • AUSV 2880 practicums will now be 3 credit hours and be Credit/No-Credit.
  • BSEP and ATEP will have common electrical, brakes, steering and suspension, and climate control systems classes.
  • The class time allotted to the brakes subject will now be three credit hours. (See justification at the bottom of this page).
  • The class time allotted to the manual drivetrain subject will now be three credit hours. (See justification at the bottom of this page).
  • The class time allotted to the climate control systems subject will now be three credit hours. (See justification at the bottom of this page).
  • BUSAD 3000 Small Business Management is an optional class.
  • SST 1143 Fundamental Selling Techniques is an optional class.
  • SST 4203 Sales Ethics is an optional class
  • 26 older multi-part courses have been deleted.  (See justification at the bottom of this page).
  • Existing students can still graduate on time with the changes implemented.

Automotive Service Technology

 

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE (A.A.S.)

Program Prerequisite: An interview with the program coordinator or advisor in the desired option is necessary prior to acceptance into the program.

 

Grade Requirements: An overall GPA of 2.00 or "C."

 

Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 63 credit hours is required.

 

Assessment Requirements: Students will be required to complete certain assessment instruments as part of the overall requirements for receiving their associate's degree.  Please see the program coordinator or your advisor or your department for specific information regarding assessment.

Admission Requirements

Declare your program of study and meet with your specific program coordinator or faculty advisor.

 

National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Requirement

  • Automotive Service students (except BSEP and HD Truck) are required to take all eight automotive ASE exams (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8).  The student must pass at least four of the eight exams to qualify for graduation.   
  • Collision repair BSEP students must take five ASE collision repair and refinish exams (B2, B3, B4, B5, and B6).  The student must pass at least three of the five exams to qualify for graduation.
  • HD Truck students are required to take all eight Medium/Heavy Duty Truck ASE exams (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, and T8).  The student must pass at least four of the eight exams to qualify for graduation.   

See www.asecert.org for testing information.  ASE exam fees are included in the student fees for each course.  Exams will be taken twice per year at the end of each semester.

 

General Education

Refer to General Requirements for Associate of Applied Science requirements. The following general education courses are required for this degree: CHEM PS1010 (3) or CHEM PS/SI1110 (5), COMM HU2110 (3), and a Social Science course (3). Computer Literacy as defined in this catalog is also required for the A.A.S. degree.

Justification for dropping twenty-six automotive service technology courses

 

  • The ten Electricity and Electronics (AUSV SI1321, AUSV SI1322, AUSV SI1331, AUSV SI1332, AUSV SI1341, AUSV SI1342, AUSV SI1351, AUSV SI1352, AUSV SI1361, AUSV SI1362) classes are multi-part classes which have been updated and combined into the five new Electronics, Electrical, and Body Control Systems classes (AUSV SI1325, AUSV SI1335, AUSV SI1345, AUSV SI1355, AUSV SI1365).
  • The three Electrical Systems classes (AUSV 2121, AUSV 2122, and AUSV 2123) are multi-part classes which have been updated and combined into the five new Electronics, Electrical, and Body Control Systems classes (AUSV SI1325, AUSV SI1335, AUSV SI1345, AUSV SI1355, AUSV SI1365).
  • The fuel injection systems (AUSV 2021), emission control systems (AUSV 2022), and all eight diagnosis, diagnosis and tune-up are no-longer technically current or multi-part classes which classes have been updated and included into the five new Engine Mechanical and Engine Control Systems classes (AUSV 2625, AUSV 2635, AUSV 2645, AUSV 2655, AUSV 2665).
  • The small internal combustion engines class (AUSV 2500) is no longer part of our mission or our curriculum.
  • The seminar class (AUSV 2990) is no longer part of our curriculum.

 


Justification for increasing the credit hours for sixteen automotive service technology courses.

 

  • The five braking systems classes (AUSV 1021, AUSV 1031, AUSV 1041, AUSV 1051, and AUSV 1051) were not technically current.  New innovations in automotive braking, traction control, vehicle stability control systems require that we update and expand our braking systems curriculum to address these new technologies.  Additionally, our manufacturer partners (General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, and Toyota) all have specific embedded curriculum requirements which used take up to 86 percent of the current course time.  For us to remain National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified, we must also teach additional topics which are common to most automotive braking systems.  We do not have enough time to cover the entire required manufacturer and NATEF required topics with the current two credit hours. We are requesting three credit hours for the revised course.

 

  • The five manual drivetrain system classes (AUSV 1220, AUSV 1230, AUSV 1240, AUSV 1250, and AUSV 1260) were not technically current.  New innovations in all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems require that we update and expand our manual drivetrain system curriculum to address these new technologies.  Additionally, our manufacturer partners (General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, and Toyota) all have specific embedded curriculum requirements which used take up to 93 percent of the current course time.  For us to remain National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified, we must also teach additional topics which are common to most automotive manual drivetrain systems.  We do not have enough time to cover the entire required manufacturer and NATEF required topics with the current two credit hours. We are requesting three credit hours for the revised course.

 

  • The five climate control system classes (AUSV 2320, AUSV 2330, AUSV 2340, AUSV 2350, and AUSV 2360) were not technically current.  New innovations in multiple zone climate control systems and automatic climate control systems require that we update and expand our climate control system curriculum to address these new technologies.  Additionally, our manufacturer partners (General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Honda, and Toyota) all have specific embedded curriculum requirements which used take up to 62 percent of the current course time.  For us to remain National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified, we must also teach additional topics which are common to most automotive climate control systems.  We do not have enough time to cover the entire required manufacturer and specifically, the NATEF required topics with the current two credit hours. We are requesting three credit hours for the revised course.
