January 15, 2007 - Tony Divino, of Tony Divino Toyota in Ogden donates two 1/2 tuition scholarships to winners of the WSU Hands-on Automotive Contest

February 1, 2007 - The Denver region Toyota dealers donate $1250.00 toward tool box and tool awards for the Weber State Automotive contest.


Time Schedule

  • 10:00 a.m. workstation setup with judges
  • 10:30 a.m. High School contestants begin to arrive.
  • 11:00 a.m. Lunch for judges and student aids class room TE-214.
  • 11:30 Orientation for High School students and Instructors in class room TE-215.
  • 12:00 noon contest begins
  • 1:35 p.m. 30-minute break
  • 3:05 p.m. contest continues 
  • 3:40 p.m. contest ends
  • 5:15 p.m. Awards banquet in Cafeteria of Union Building
  • 7:00 p.m. Grand Prizes awarded at half-time of WSU basketball game in the Dee Events Center. Obtain your free game tickets at the awards banquet. 

Contest Information

The twenty-first annual Weber State University Automotive Contest (Skills/Hands-on portion) of the contest was held Thursday, February 1, 2007 at 12 noon in the Technical Education building at WSU.  48 students from 24 schools qualified for the Skills/Hands-on portion of the contest.  The students competed for:

The 1st and 2nd place prize vehicles were on display; 2005 Dodge Neon and a 2003 Saturn Vue. 

  • The 1st place and 2nd place schools win a training vehicle for their automotive program. The 1st place school gets first choice of the following two vehicles:
    • 2005 Dodge Neon SE, 2.0L L-4 with a 40TE 4-speed automatic transaxle. Odometer = 2 miles. 
    • 2003 Saturn Vue Sport Utility, 3.0L V-6 with an A131L 5-speed automatic transaxle.  Odometer = 2 miles. (slight body damage on front end)
  • The 3rd place school wins a Coats model 850 wheel balancer from WSU.
  • Student winners 1-6 win a one-year "tuition only" waiver automotive scholarships (worth approximately $2800.00) from Weber State University.
  • Student winners 1-10 win a Snap-On 2-drawer tool cart.
  • Student Winners 11-12 win a Matco wrench set.
  • Student Winners 13-22 win a Snap-On 8-piece screw driver set
  • Student winners 23-32 win a Snap-On 7-piece ratcheting screw driver set.
  • Student winners 33-38 win a Matco wrench set or screw driver set.
  • All participants qualify to participate in the “Educational Trip” to California, which will be February 7 - 11, 2007

There were workstations on the following topics:

The ASE areas covered are:

  • C1 Automobile Service Consultant

The students compete by participating in 12 workstations:

  • 2 (A4) Steering and Suspension workstations
  • 2 (A5) Brakes workstations
  • 2 (A6) Electrical/Electronic Systems workstations
  • 1 (A8) Engine Performance workstation
  • 1 (C1) Automobile Service Consultant workstation 
  • 1 Shop Safety and workstations
  • 1 Hazardous Waste workstations
  • 2 Career and Industry Information sessions


10 tool carts, 2 wrench sets, and 28 screw driver sets were donated as prizes by:

  • Snap-On Industrial Tools
  • Matco Tools
  • Denver Region Toyota Dealers
  • Weber State University

Students competed in a brake rotor measurement workstation on a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica.  (ASE area A5)

  

 

Students learned about career opportunities from employers in the automotive industry.

 

 

 

Students competed in an electrical diagnosis workstation on a 2003 Ford Mustang GT.  (ASE area A6)

 

 

 

Students competed in an engine performance diagnosis workstation on a 2004 Saturn Ion  (ASE area A8)

 

 

 

Students competed in a new Automobile Service Consultant (ASE area C1) workstation on a 2007 Saturn Sky.

 

 

 

Students competed in a Steering and Suspension workstation on a 2003 Toyota Camry. (ASE area A4)

 

 

 

Students competed in Shop Safety and Hazardous Waste workstations on a 2002 Honda Civic and a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu.


CONTEST RULES

  • The overall raw score will determine always the grand champion.
  • All Student winners receive their tool prizes on the day of the competition.
  • Six of top-ten winning students receive full tuition or half tuition waivers for one year. (Tuition waivers do not cover student fees, books, or housing).
  • Only High School seniors may receive tuition waivers for the WSU automotive program.
  • A tied score will be resolved by the school's written contest score.
  • High School Juniors may not compete.
  • Tool prizes are to be awarded the day of the contest.
  • Students who choose not to attend WSU fall 2007-2008 will forfeit their scholarship.  The scholarship will be made available to the next highest scoring school's students.

The schools with the highest score in each of the 6 contest areas were announced at the awards banquet at the cafeteria in the Union Building.

Instructor: Jay Hales wins the 2003 Saturn Vue for his High School Automotive Shop.  Students Jace Hilton and Nicholas Wells win Snap-On tool carts and WSU automotive scholarships.

 

 

3rd Place - Bingham High School, South Jordan, UT.  

Instructor: David Stevenson wins a Coats Model 850 Wheel Balancer for his High School Automotive Shop.  Students Brandon Stevenson and Tase Thompson win Snap-On tool carts and WSU automotive scholarships.

  

 

4th Place - Bridgerland ATC, Logan, UT. Instructor: Loran Hirschi

Students Chase Christiansen and Wesley Allred win Snap-On tool carts.

 

 

 5th Place - Emery High School, Price, UT. Instructor: Mike Kava
