NOTE:  Beginning in 2010, new graduate students will begin in the Summer semester (May) rather than the fall semester.

The WSU Master of Science in Athletic Training degree is designed to enable students with a bachelor's degree in an area other than athletic training to obtain eligibility for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. This program will seek accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Once the program is accredited, students will be eligible for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination and an athletic training license in Utah.

Accreditation Timeline:

     September 1, 2009 - Submit self-study to the CAATE - DONE!

     Jan-Mar, 2010 - Host CAATE site visitors

July/Aug 2010 - Receive final accreditation decision from the CAATE

The program provides students with knowledge and skills in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and general medical conditions. The Master of Science in Athletic Training program (MSAT) is specifically designed to prepare students for a career in allied health care as a certified athletic trainer. Athletic trainers are currently employed in colleges and universities, public and private high schools, corporations, physical therapy clinics, professional organizations, the military, factories, and hospitals (www.nata.org - National Athletic Trainers' Association).

Seventy percent of all Certified Athletic Trainers hold at least a masters degree.  This is becoming the professional standard.  The MS in Athletic Training program at Weber State University is specifically designed for students who already possess a bachelor’s degree in a related allied health or exercise science area.  However, students with a bachelor's degree in a different field could enter the program after meeting the pre-requisite coursework.

Students must complete pre-requisite coursework prior to admission and all 51 graduate credits.

Clinical Rotations - Students will complete a variety of clinical rotations with   Division I-AA WSU athletics teams, high schools athletics, sports medicine/physical therapy clinics, and physician's offices.  There will also be many opportunities to work with other health care professionals at marathons, triathlons, the Special Olympics, and figure skating competitions, just to name a few.
