What's the Latest on Campus Construction Projects this Summer?
May 2, 2008

(Last updated: May 7, 2008)

Three major construction projects (Stewart Bell Tower Plaza, Dixon Drive realignment and Hurst Center construction) will begin shortly on campus resulting in some changes to pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns this summer.

At the same time, work continues on Elizabeth Hall and the renovation of the east side of Shepherd Union Building.

Check out the Ogden campus map to see exactly what areas of campus are affected by the construction projects.

Here's some information that may help you navigate campus during this busy construction season.

Stewart Bell Tower Plaza Project – Summer 2008

From May to July, the walking pathway from the Stewart Library west to the entrance of the North Shepherd Union Atrium will be closed. During this time, construction crews will finish the plaza walkway improvements in that area.

How can I get from lower campus (below the Bell Tower Plaza) to upper campus?
Signs along the perimeter of the construction zone will offer you directional information to reach specific locations. Plan an additional five minutes walking time, on average, to get around the construction zone.

How will this affect access to Stewart Library?
Effective May 7, the pedestrian pathway through the Bell Tower Plaza leading to the west entrance of Stewart Library will be closed. Due to the east-to-west corridor closure, you will need to use the east entrance of the Stewart Library to enter the building. The west doors will be available as an exit-only in an emergency.

Will disability access still be open?
The ramps between Lampros Hall and Tracy Plaza are still accessible for use.

When will the Bell Tower Plaza construction be completed?
The east-to-west pedestrian corridor will reopen by the end of July. The rest of the Bell Tower Plaza redesign is scheduled for completion in December 2008.

What will the new Stewart Bell Tower Plaza look like?
The concrete around the bell tower is being replaced with trees, grass and water features to create a more inviting space for visitors to the center of campus.

Dixon Drive realignment – Summer 2008

In late May, the Utah Department of Transportation will begin work on creating two traffic circles along Dixon Drive.

Where will the traffic circles be?
The circles will be located just east of the 3850 S. and 3950 S. entrances to campus along Harrison Boulevard.

Why are we creating traffic circles?
When completed, the new traffic patterns will move vehicles more efficiently on and off campus. The circles should eliminate the bottleneck that occurs at the intersection of Dixon Drive and 4100 South. Work on this project will affect access to and traffic patterns along Dixon Drive.

When will the project be completed?
The project is scheduled to be completed by late August—prior to the start of fall semester.

Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning – Summer 2008

May 5, 2008, construction began on the Hurst Center for Lifelong Learning. The building will be located between the Lindquist Alumni Center and Promontory Tower (PT).

Will there be events in the alumni center during construction?
The Alumni Center is not scheduling any events for off-campus groups until a new parking lot west of the building is complete. The new lot is scheduled to be finished in mid-to-late August. Campus groups are welcome to use the Alumni Center during construction. However, event parking will only be available in the evenings. Anyone meeting during the day will need to either walk to the Alumni Center or take the shuttle bus.

How will guests and employees enter the alumni center during construction?
The front entrance to the Alumni Center —the horseshoe-shaped entrance in front of the building will remain open. The entrance through the garden area on the south of the building also will provide access to the building. A wheel-chair accessible section will be added to the pathway linking the garden to the Burger King/WSU Credit Union parking lots.

How will guests and employees enter Promontory Tower during construction?
Pedestrians can enter PT on both the east and west sides. The east entrance will not be affected by the construction. To access the west entrance, pedestrians must take the stairs from the sidewalk running parallel to 4100 South.

Where will guests and employees of the alumni center and PT park during construction?
During the week of May 5, the R3 lot will be brought down to 48 parking stalls. Both the north and south sides of 4100 South will be available for parallel parking.

On May 12, the R3 lot will be completely closed. Other parking options for staff who work in PT and the Alumni Center include the R2 lot east of PT, the W7 lot north of the practice field or the W8 lot south of the Browning Center.

Will parking be available in the Burger King/WSU Credit Union parking lots?
A number of parking spaces in those areas are being reserved for disabled access, service access to the Alumni Center and for construction employees only.

Elizabeth Hall construction – Summer 2008

Construction continues. During the summer months, access to the east doors of the Wattis Business Building will be unavailable. Please use a different entrance to the Wattis Business Building.

Elizabeth Hall is scheduled to open January 2009.

Shepherd Union Building renovation – Summer 2008

Construction continues. Renovated east side of Union is expected to re-open late summer/early fall.

We appreciate your patience and understanding with all the construction on campus this summer. Once completed, these projects will result in some marvelous new resources and amenities for campus.
