"The recently planned national tour of ‘Annie' resulted in a rights/royalty conflict," UMT Artistic and Managing Director Bruce Cohen said. "As a result, we've opted to cancel our plans to stage ‘Annie' this season, but it remains on our short list of shows for future seasons."
Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate," based on the book by Sam and Bella Spewack, uses Shakespeare's raucous "Taming of the Shrew" as its foundation. The story is a hilarious tale of battling lovers during a one-day tryout for a musical version of "Shrew."
Cohen said he's excited about bringing "Kiss Me Kate" to the UMT stage. He said the show is a wonderful complement running in repertory with "Side by Side by Sondheim."
"Sondheim and Porter, musical theatre doesn't get much better than that," Cohen said.
Production dates for "Kiss Me Kate" will be the same as those originally announced for "Annie." For more information about UMT's 2005 season, visit weber.edu/UMT.
