Weber State Campus Picture Perfect For Eric Dowdle

OGDEN, Utah — Utah folk artist Eric Dowdle, famous for his iconic and detailed paintings and puzzles, has depicted Weber State University and its history in his most recent work of art.

He unveiled the new piece at a private reception on Dec. 10 at the Lindquist Alumni Center. The event was sponsored by the WSU Alumni Association.

“This piece of artwork is intended to capture the great traditions and history of Weber State University from the early days in Ogden to the current multiple campuses,” said Andre Lortz, Alumni Association president. “We believe that anyone, alumnus or not, would be proud to have a copy of this painting and the puzzles or other items that will be created from it.”

Using photos from WSU’s Archival Collections, Dowdle included buildings and scenes many will recognize, such as the Dee Events Center, the university’s 12 presidents and Waldo. He also added a number of lesser-known historical moments.

“You can see students in the painting who are paying tuition with produce and cattle, because Weber College accepted those as payment during the Great Depression,” said Nancy Collinwood, executive director of alumni relations. “He painted a person windsurfing on the Lindquist Plaza duck pond, which occurred sometime in the 1980s. Anyone looking at the picture will enjoy experiencing Weber State’s exciting history.”

Reproductions of the work are available for purchase in various sizes. A puzzle will be sold for $18.89, in honor of the university’s founding year. Proceeds from the sales will help fund student scholarships.

Dowdle has traveled the world as an artist, painting on nearly every continent, but he still calls Utah home.

“If you are an alumnus of Weber State, you might have participated in a few of these events or attended class in some of these buildings,” Collinwood said. “There is something for everyone to find in this picture. It not only is nostalgic, but also it gives a sense of pride to look at this and see the vibrancy of the campus.”
