OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University's Stewart Library will be closed for two weeks while its primary electrical system is replaced.
The library closed on Dec. 12 and is scheduled to reopen at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 29. No books or media will be due until Jan. 5, 2004, but patrons may return items to the WSU Davis Library (2750 N. University Park Blvd.) in Layton or campus book drops.
The project entails removing and replacing the library's high-voltage electrical equipment, which dates back to the building's construction in 1965. State inspectors cited safety and efficiency concerns in recommending the overhaul. Funding for the $121,000-capitol improvement project was approved during the 2003 legislative session.
The project is estimated to take two weeks to complete, so library staff decided scheduling the upgrade during the break between fall and spring semesters would cause the least disruption and inconvenience for library visitors.
While the library is closed, several alternatives are available for students, faculty, staff and the public.
The WSU Davis Library will provide patrons with reference assistance, access to most library databases, selected books and magazines, email delivery of articles and references from the Stewart Library databases, and book and media return services. Computer labs at the Shepherd Union Building and WSU Davis Information Commons will also be available. The WSU Davis Library and both computer labs will be open Dec. 13-28, Mon.-Sat., 8 a.m.-4 p.m. (except holidays).
All library databases except the WSU Library catalog will be available on campus. Off-campus access to basic databases will be available via Pioneer, Utah's online library at pioneer.utah.gov (public library card required). Current students, faculty and staff may use their Wildcat ID cards to borrow books from the libraries of the University of Utah, Utah State University and Brigham Young University and other academic institutions throughout the state.
Books and media located in the Stewart Library, interlibrary loan, reserve and document delivery services will be unavailable until the library re-opens.
