Commencement Ceremony Planned for Dec. 9

December 1, 2011

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University officials are expecting more than 1,370 candidates for graduation this December. WSU will award degrees and institutional certificates on Dec. 9 during its 138th commencement ceremony at the Dee Events Center. The commencement exercises will begin at 1 p.m.

Unlike the university’s spring commencement, when individual convocations are held separately from the main program, WSU’s business school and six academic colleges will confer all degrees and certificates during this one inclusive ceremony.

All graduates attending the commencement ceremony will receive a commemorative medallion in recognition of their accomplishment. The medallions will be presented only to graduates in attendance at the commencement exercise.

“Putting Students Through,” a program honoring parents, spouses and friends of graduates, will precede the ceremony at 9 a.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballroom.

Utah and Wyoming native Paul Cox, the executive director for The Institute for EthnoMedicine, will deliver the keynote commencement address and will be awarded an honorary degree. The student graduate speaker will be Erica Larsen, an Ogden resident originally from Puebla, Mexico, who is earning her bachelor’s degree in health promotion.

Guest tickets are not required for the commencement ceremonies. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. ASL services will be available Section S at the base of Portal 17. Parking on campus will be free throughout the day Dec. 9.

The commencement ceremony can be viewed by Dec. 16 on WSU’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/weberstateu. On Dec. 16, DVD copies of graduation will be available for $3 at the Weber State University Bookstore. DVDs may be pre-ordered by logging into bookstore.weber.edu and selecting the appropriate link under Featured Items.

WSU began holding winter commencement in 1996 because of the closure of the Val A. Browning Center for major renovations. In 1999, the university’s Board of Trustees decided to make the semi-annual ceremony a permanent event.
