WSU Student Interns for ‘The Daily Show’

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University communication student Dylan Allred may have roots in radio broadcasting, but he has taken his talents to television for an internship at Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” in New York City.

Dylan, the son of popular Utah radio personality and Weber State alumnus Bill Allred, landed his “dream” position completing a fall 2014 general production internship with the Emmy Award-winning “The Daily Show.”

“I sent out dozens of applications to shows all over the country,” Allred said from his New York home. “I landed three interviews, but I’m so happy I got a job at this show in particular, because when it comes to late-night talk shows, there is none better than “The Daily Show.”

Allred said he is grateful to have an internship with diverse duties, as he learns the ins-and-outs of television production on the national stage.

“Every day, I get to work with a different department within the show and learn what they do. I’m dabbling in every piece of the show, so I can see how it all comes together and gets produced. I do all sorts of stuff, ranging from setting up the studio audience to running around New York City to pick up props.”

WSU communication students, a part of the Telitha A Lindquist College of Arts & Humanitites, are required to complete internships as a prerequisite for graduation, and several students have completed high-profile internships through the years, including positions with E! News, “Conan” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Communication instructor and Studio 76 faculty advisor Drew Tyler said students need drive and motivation to find and complete internships.

“Many of our students come to us early in their college careers and say, ‘Hey, I want to do this.’ So we start making content that’s directly related to where they want to complete an internship. They do their own work, set up their own interviews and provide their own materials to get the internship. It’s very impressive, whether they are working at internships locally or high-profile companies nationally.”

For example, Allred prepared for his internship with one year of work at Studio 76, WSU’s student-run video production studio, and two more years at Weber FM, WSU’s student-run radio station. His internship began in September, and he hopes to remain with “The Daily Show” as a full-time staff member once his internship ends in December.

“I’m a student now, but Weber State provided me with a really great jumping off point, so I could enter a job like this on day one and hit the ground running,” Allred said. “Everything I’ve learned at Weber can be extrapolated to a professional setting, so I’m ready to go, now.”
