OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University construction management teams had a strong showing at the 2010 BYU Construction Management Challenge, winning first place in three of four categories.
WSU’s teams, consisting of seven students each, took first in the heavy civil, residential and design build competitions. A fourth WSU team placed third in the commercial problem category.
Each category’s scenario is based on an actual construction project. Prior to announcing winners in each category, judges explain how the real-world construction situation was handled.
Kristen Park, an assistant professor in the Parson Construction Management Technology program at WSU, said the competition provides students with real-life experience.
“Our students learn how to work in time-sensitive situations, while not having all of the information they need,” said Park, who advises the teams. “They get to use their education to come up with creative problem solving and present their decisions to people in the industry.”
During the first phase of the competition, the student teams receive the problem and have a few days to turn in their bid proposals. They then have a week before making their formal presentations to the judges at BYU.
During the presentation phase, the judges ask the students questions about their bid numbers, the layout of the jobsite and any other information that they included, or forgot to include, in the previously submitted materials.
This year’s challenge, held Nov. 8, featured teams from BYU, Mesa State, Southern Utah University and Utah Valley University.
Park said the Parson Construction Management Technology program uses the annual CM Challenge as a way to prepare students for the Associate Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition, which will be held February 2011 in Nevada. The ASC competition is a regional event where WSU students will compete against schools from nine states.
“The Challenge provides an opportunity for our students to be recognized for their work,” Park said. “As a professor, it gives me a chance to see where I can improve my teaching.”
