11th Annual Wildcat Block Party to Kick Off School Year

OGDEN, Utah — The annual Weber State University Wildcat Block Party on Sept. 4 will draw thousands to an outdoor, back-to-school celebration. The event will educate students and the community on how to get involved in all the activities the university offers.

“The block party is one of the most important traditions we have at WSU,” said Tara Peris-Caputo, assistant director of Student Involvement and Leadership. “It allows the entire campus to celebrate, all together, the many services, majors, departments, activities and organizations we have here.”

Campus organizations will use this year’s theme, “This Is the Future,” to create booths and compete for awards. The theme is drawn from the movie series “Back To The Future,” which is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Throughout the day, various activities will raise support and awareness for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds outreach and research about Parkinson’s disease.

The party begins with the free President’s Purple Pancake Breakfast at 8 a.m., served by President Charles A. Wight and other WSU administrators. Campus and community booths open at 8:30 a.m. Sponsored activities are scheduled throughout the day.

More than 150 groups are expected to sponsor booths for the event. The booths will be divided into categories such as academic departments, campus and community partners, commercial groups, and WSU clubs and organizations.

In addition, a DeLorean, the car that was made into a time machine in “Back to the Future,” will be on display. The WSU Student Association will give away a longboard, in honor of the hover board featured in the film series. A film screening of the first movie in the series will run throughout the day starting at 2 p.m. in the Wildcat Room and Wildcat Theater of the Shepherd Union Building.

The booths, food and fun will run from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Parking will be available on Harrison Boulevard and at the pay lot on the south side of the Shepherd Union Building.

“If there is a one-stop shop for finding out what WSU has to offer, it’s block party,” Peris-Caputo said.
