Foundation Names WSU to Top Sales Program List

OGDEN, Utah – The Sales Education Foundation (SEF) released its annual list of Top University Sales Programs, highlighting Weber State University as one of the best locations for hiring sales professionals. 

According to Sally Stevens, executive director of SEF, an increased focus on sales and services has led companies to pay more attention to sales-program graduates. “With a track record for producing top sales talent, it’s no wonder that sales students have a job placement rate at graduation of 90 percent in their field, compared to approximately 45 percent in other graduate fields,” Stevens said.

According to the chair of WSU’s technical sales program, Vel Casler, WSU’s graduate placement rate in the program is 100 percent with starting salaries as high as the mid-$70,000’s. 

“We teach every aspect of professional sales to our students, so when they go to work, they only have to learn the product, and they are ready to go,” Casler said. “Students who are prepared can save companies as much as $100,000 in training costs.”

Programs listed by SEF as top universities for professional sales offer a minimum requirement of three sales-specific courses, university recognition for individuals completing their program and the opportunity for internships. Most provide sales in the form of a certificate program, concentration or minor to students from a diverse list of majors.  

At WSU, students can earn a bachelor’s degree in technical sales. The major requires 16 courses, such as negotiation, forecasting and proposal writing. 

Technical sales professor Carl Grunander said this recognition, along with the recent announcement of the Alan E. Hall Center for Sales Excellence, provides additional professional opportunities for students.

“It definitely means more companies will learn about our program and recruit our students,” Grunander said. “For example, of 15 sales slots recently available at Oracle, eight went to graduates from our program. The word is getting out about the quality of our graduates.”

Weber State’s sales program began in 1985 and graduates approximately 150 students per year.
