OGDEN, Utah – The nationally ranked Weber State University Men’s Soccer Club has been given the opportunity to play the Mexican Under-21 Men's National Team.
“It's unreal,” said club president and goalkeeper Jeff Rogers. “I can’t describe it. To play a FIFA sanctioned match and to play them on our field, it’s unheard of. I spent three years training with Real Salt Lake and I won nationals with Weber State, but this is the most exciting thing to happen to me.”
Mexico will first face Brigham Young University on May 12 in Provo, then take on WSU on May 14, and the Real Salt Lake reserves on May 15.
“As for the team and the school, it’s the coolest thing to happen to WSU,” Rogers said. “A lot of people won’t recognize that but it’s like bringing the Pittsburgh Steelers to compete against our football team. It's unprecedented, it never happens. This really is a once in a lifetime deal not only to the 25 guys on the squad but to the university as a whole.”
The match against WSU will be held at Ogden High School (2828 Harrison Blvd., Ogden). Kickoff is at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the gate. Discounted tickets can be purchased for $5 with a current Wildcat ID or for children 12 and under. Group rates are also available. To purchase tickets, contact Jeff Rogers, any WSU men’s soccer player, or visit Soccer Connection (3912 S. Washington Blvd., Ogden).
