Wildcat Athletics Receives NCAA Certification

April 16, 2009

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University’s Athletics Department has been recertified by the NCAA, following an extensive internal and external review process.

The NCAA Committee on Division I Certification announced its findings on Thursday. WSU was one of 35 universities and colleges nationwide to receive certification.

The NCAA certification process is designed to ensure integrity within an institution’s athletics program and help schools improve their athletics departments. NCAA legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993.

The certification process at WSU began in August 2007. WSU’s self-study, led by Jan Winniford, vice president for Student Affairs, included a review of Wildcat Athletics’ governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, equity and student-athlete well-being.

Winniford credited a campus-wide effort for the successful outcome, thanking everyone from WSU and the community who served on the self-study.

“I’m grateful for the dedication and hard work of all the students, faculty, staff and community members who contributed to this study during the last 18 months,” Winniford said. “This introspective process helped us assess what we do well, and identify areas we can work on. The result improves not only athletics, but also the experiences for our student-athletes, and Weber State overall.”

According to a press release issued by the NCAA, “A designation of certified means that an institution operates its athletics program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership.”

“Obviously, this announcement provides external validation of Wildcat Athletics,” said athletics director Jerry Graybeal. “From the commitment of the university as a whole, to the support of our fans and the community, to the hard work of our coaches and student-athletes, the success of Wildcat Athletics takes a team effort.”

The successful outcome concludes the second certification cycle for WSU Wildcat Athletics. The department first earned NCAA certification in 1999. Under NCAA requirements and guidelines adopted in 1993 and 1997, all Division I schools must undertake a certification of its athletics programs once every 10 years.
