WSU Commencement Ceremonies Celebrate Class of 2010

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University officials are expecting the Class of 2010 to total more than 3,566 graduates. More than 2,314 candidates for graduation this spring will be honored April 23 during WSU’s 135th commencement. An additional 1,252 members of the Class of 2010 received their degrees in conjunction with the university’s winter commencement last December.

Following a change in the academic calendar, WSU’s spring commencement is a week earlier this year, which means graduates will be entering the workforce a week ahead of many of their peers at other Utah institutions.

“The weather might be a bit more unpredictable in late April, but the spirit of achievement and celebration definitely will be consistent with past years,” said Marsha Richter, commencement chair.

All graduates attending the main commencement ceremony at 8 a.m. in the Dee Events Center will receive a commemorative medallion in recognition of their accomplishment. The medallions will only be presented to the graduates during the main commencement exercise and not at the individual college convocations, where students will receive their diplomas.

The main ceremony will be held April 23 in the Dee Events Center. An academic processional will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the formal program. Thomas S. Monson, 16th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, will deliver the keynote address and will be awarded an honorary degree. Other honorary degree recipients are: Leola L. Davidson, Nancy L. Davidson and Carol Watkins Hurst.

The student graduate speaker will be Matthew Warner, of Syracuse, Utah, who is graduating with a master’s degree in business administration. Warner earned a bachelor’s degree in information systems and technology from WSU in 2002.

The 2010 WSU Presidential Distinguished Professors also will be honored during the program. This year’s recipients are zoology professor John Cavitt, psychology professor Lauren Fowler, and chemistry professor Edward Walker.

“Putting Student Through,” a short program where graduates honor parents, spouses and friends who supported them, will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballroom.

Following the format established in 2008, this year’s commencement activities will all take place on the same day, rather than splitting events over two days.

A lunch will be served in the Shepherd Union Atrium from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 23. Graduates will receive two complimentary tickets to the meal. Additional tickets may be purchased in advance for $9 each at the Shepherd Union Building Information Desk.

“We hope that our graduates and their families will spend the day on campus, celebrating their degree and basking in their accomplishment,” Richter said.

WSU's business school and six academic colleges will hold individual convocations April 23 at various locations. Refer to the attached schedule for exact times and locations.

The general commencement program will be rebroadcast on KUED (Channel 7) May 1 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The event will be streamed live via the Web at weber.edu/commencement/.

Parking will be free of charge throughout the day on April 23. Campus shuttle buses will be running between the Dee Events Center and the main campus all day.

ASL services will be available in seating section S at the base of portal 17.
