Summer Youth Program Casualty of Federal Budget Cuts

OGDEN, Utah – Due to a federal budget cut, the National Youth Sports Program, which has benefited hundreds of area youths the past eight summers, has not been funded for 2006.

“It’s unfortunate that, because of a lack of federal appropriations, we’re not able to offer the program this year,” said Kim Hyatt, NYSP program administrator and Weber State University assistant professor of health promotion and human performance. “We hope that Congress will find the resources to fund the program in the future.”

NYSP was a free summer program funded by the federal government for children between the ages of 10-16, 90 percent of whom were required to come from low-income families. The program provided a month-long retreat, complete with lunch, transportation to and from WSU and instruction in a variety of sports. Participants also received a free physical examination at the beginning of the program each year.
