OGDEN, Utah – Author, model, television host and environmental activist Summer Rayne Oakes will speak at two events March 3 at Weber State University.
Oakes’ presentation, “Get Off Your Butt and Make a Difference,” will examine the need for individual activism. This presentation will be held at noon in the Shepherd Union Wildcat Theater on WSU’s Ogden Campus.
At 7 p.m., WSU will host an “Open Forum with Summer Rayne Oakes.” Following some opening remarks on sustainability issues, the remainder of the time will be available for a question-and-answer session and discussion with the audience. The evening program also will be in the Shepherd Union Wildcat Theater.
During her campus visit, Oakes is scheduled to speak in several classes throughout the day and with the WSU Environmental Club. Oakes’ presentations, part of WSU’s Convocation Lecture Series, are free to the public.
In 2000 Oakes graduated from Cornell University where she studied entomology and environmental science. She recently released a book titled “Style, Naturally,” which is a guide to sustainable beauty and fashion. She has dedicated her modeling career to cause-related,values-based efforts, working solely with environmentally and socially conscious companies and brands. Oakes has been instrumental in assisting numerous fashion designers and organic beauty companies garner mainstream attention. Along with posing in numerous magazines, she writes for many, such as Lucire Magazine and Grist Magazine. She also is a columnist for Treehugger.com and Planetgreen.com and is a host on the Discovery Channel’s Planet Green.
