27th Annual Automotive Contest Attracts High School Teams
OGDEN, Utah – High school teams from Utah, Idaho, Oregon and Texas will get all “revved up” during Weber State University’s 27th annual Automotive Scholarship Contest.
High school seniors in teams of two will compete for scholarships, tools and a vehicle for their schools in the championship round, Feb. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. in WSU’s Technical Education Building Automotive Shop.
The first round of the contest was held Dec. 5 and consisted of a 49-question written test that covered areas of shop safety, service excellence, hazardous-materials handling and pollution prevention.
Teams that placed in the top 24 on the written test were invited to compete in the upcoming, hands-on skills competition. Students are tested in four automotive areas: suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems and engine performance, as well as shop safety and pollution prevention. The teams will spend four hours at 12 workstations set up for the contest.
“Our annual automotive competition is a great way for high school students to see what Weber State University has to offer them,” said automotive technology department chair Joe Grundvig. “The competition was my first exposure to Weber State University when I attended as a high school senior many years ago.”
Each team member from the top six teams will receive at least $1,000 in scholarship money to WSU. The top-place finishing team will receive a 2007 Buick Lacrosse for their school automotive department.
