Upward Bound students are required to participate in the six-week summer residential academic camp during June and July each year.
During the first week of the summer residential program, the students go on a one-week academic field trip, which gives them experiences to build on during the next five weeks in their summer academic classes.
The following five weeks students live on Weber State University campus, eat in the dormitory cafeteria, utilized university’s facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, gymnasium, computer labs, library, sports fields, shuttle buses, etc.
In the morning, students attend five academic classes: English, math, science, foreign language and technology. ACT preparation is provided to all juniors.
After lunch, students participate in specialized training courses such as: team building test-taking strategies, language arts skills, art, and introduction to college courses. In addition, students demonstrate their team building and leadership skills through the history simulation. These simulations provide the opportunity for students to build on their experiences from the one-week academic field trip. Using hands-on experiential activities students learn how populations lived during the specific time period being studied.
Evening activities include: community service projects, physical education, social activities, individual and group counseling.
