Disability Assistance in Testing

Various accommodations are available for students with disabilities such as, providing a reader or an assistant to record responses for tests or providingWheelchair tests on cassette tapes, in Braille or in large print. Many special accommodations are provided by the office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

For some standardized tests, special requests must be made with the testing company. In such cases, the Student Services Testing Center can provide the necessary forms and information. Listed below, are the special arrangements needed for specific tests.

ACT Test

Only students with current documented disabilities who have been professionally diagnosed as having physical, psychological, or learning disabilities, and cannot test under standard conditions are eligible for special testing. The test is available in regular type with extended time, large type, braille, cassette or cassette with raised line tables and illustrations. The procedure is for the student to obtain a Special Testing Request Form at the Testing Center, complete the form giving verification of diagnosis of the disability and return it to the Director of the Testing Center. The form is then reviewed and sent to ACT for approval. If approved, the appropriate test is sent to the Testing Center and a testing date can be coordinated with the student.

CLEP Test

The Director of Testing is authorized to determine with the examinee, what special testing accommodations are needed. Such accommodations include testing with an extended time limit or providing a reader. The tests are not available in braille or on cassette. The test administrator is required to send documentation to the testing company when the test is scored to verify the special accommodations that were granted. The student report of scores may indicate that the test was administered under other than standard conditions.

GED Test

Any candidate wishing to complete the GED Tests under special conditions or to use special editions of the test must provide the Chief Examiner with written verification, by a competent and appropriate professional person, of that candidate's inability to perform test-taking skills required by standard conditions and must include a specific justification for GED testing under special conditions. This must be documented on an Application for Special Testing available at the Student Services Testing Center. The application must be approved by the Utah state administrator and the GED Testing Service.

The following types of accommodations are available for GED testing but are not limited to these: audio cassette edition; regular test or large print with extended time; use of a scribe; use of a calculator; frequent breaks. The tests are also available in large type and in Spanish. These editions may be administered under standard conditions without approval of the state administrator or the GED Testing Service.

PPST Test

Candidates who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, learning disabled, physically or emotionally disabled or who have an illness-related or temporary disability, and an accommodation is warranted, may request a nonstandard test administration. The most commonly requested accommodations are the assistance of a reader, a person to record answers, additional testing time, sign-language or oral interpreter, enlarged-print and braille test books.

Requirements for requesting special accommodations are listed in the Registration Bulletin which is available in the Student Services Testing Center. The required documents should be submitted to the Testing Center Staff at least two weeks before the regular registration deadline.
