Ruth Patiño Stubbs received her undergraduate degree in social work at Brigham Young University in 1999. She then worked with Hispanic families for one and half years at the Center for Women and Children in Crisis primarily assessing the needs of clients, case management, and domestic violence education. In January of 2001, she transferred to the Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach at the University of Northern Las Vegas, working with the ETS (Educational Talent Search) and Upward Bound programs-federally-funded programs that focus on college-readiness for middle school and high school students. Afterwards, she has done individual, group and family counseling with youth and families at Salt Lake County Youth Services, and crisis counseling, life-skills education and advisement with the Alternative High School Program at Horizonte Instruction and Training Center.
In 2003, she received her graduate degree in Social Work from the University of Utah. She came to Weber State University in August of 2003 serving as counselor for Services for Multicultural Students until October of 2005 assisting students with enrollment and scholarships, initiating the SMS Ambassador Program and serving as advisor to the Hispanic Area Council.
She then, realized the need to expand WSU efforts of outreach in Ogden City schools in assisting youth prepare for college and became Coordinator of Student to Student Outreach in July of 2005. The program has served five schools, over 250 participants per year providing college-readiness information/exposure, mentoring/tutoring and parent outreach information on college for Ogden City schools. In September of 2006, WSU received the federally-funded Trio grant, Educational Talent Search that focuses on college-readiness in four target schools, 7-12th grade students within Ogden City School District. As coordinator, she’s excited to work with this program knowing it will provide a valuable resource to students as they plan for their future after high school!
