Leslie Loeffel

Leslie Loeffel

Job title: Director of the Davis Learning Center

What is your favorite band/music?: I am a fan of all kinds of blues music, such as jump blues, Chicago blues, and Delta blues.

What is your favorite part of your job?: One part of my job that I particularly enjoy is supporting student employees in their growth and development. For example, I help SI leaders with lesson planning, support the computer lab team leader in managing his team, and give feedback to writing tutors.

I also enjoy looking at the big picture, thinking through problems, and finding ways to improve services for students. For example, I currently have the opportunity to help plan a new testing center for the Davis Campus.

What was your experience in your field before this position?: I taught writing and English courses at Syracuse University for fourteen years. As part of the job, I also tutored for ten hours per week. I now supervise the department at Davis Campus which offers tutoring and Supplemental Instruction study groups. My job still involves teaching and coaching since I’m involved in training these student leaders.

My first job at Weber State University was as the Educational Advisor in Student Support Services. There, in addition to working directly with students, I developed administrative skills to meet the demands of federal grant reporting. In my current position, I use those same skills of planning, organizing, assessing, and reporting.

What advice would you have for students who have future aspirations of attaining your job title?: Although training in a specific job field is valuable, I would advise students to take advantage of all that a liberal arts education offers. I am an English major, and it has served me well. The number one skill employers seek is flexibility. In Student Affairs careers, employees need a variety of skills and a mind open to a wide range of ideas and people. I would advise students to explore many subjects, participate in a study abroad program, be an active participant in their education!

What makes you smile each morning as you prepare to start the day?: My cat makes me smile any time of the day.
