What can I do with a degree in geography?

With a degree in geography, you will be on track for a career as a cartographer, urban and regional planner, military and foreign service officer, geographic information systems (GIS) professional, high school or college teacher, resource manager, park ranger, environmental specialist, or land use or transportation planner.


What will I learn?

Geography is the study of maps and the spatial patterns that form on the Earth's surface. These patterns represent phenomena that are part of nature or part of human culture. 

You will be prepared to enter occupations that require knowledge from the natural and social sciences broad realms of expertise.


Why study geography?  

1. Employment: A diverse and growing list of careers both locally and globally has made the geography job market its best in 40 years.

2. Technology: The U.S. Department of Labor recently named Geospatial Technologies (GIS) one of the three most important of the 21st century.

3. Internships: Many of our students gain real-world experience, pay and college credit through internships.

4. Flexibility: Geography students enjoy the choice of a dozen emphases, more electives than any major, and day, evening and online classes.

5. Faculty: Top-notch faculty mix their research and publishing with field trips and classroom teaching in a personal educational environment.

Although there is no application deadline, we encourage you to apply early and register for classes. Contact the Department of Geography for specific information or to schedule an advisement time.
