A Chronology of the Weber State MultiCultural Center

1968-1970

Black Student Union (BSU) and other student minority groups formulated under Division of Student Affairs, Dr. Alan Dayley - Dean

1969-1971

"Project Respect" developed and implemented, George B. Campbell - Director

1969-1970

President W.P. Miller and Vice President Hoffman establish fact finding mission to southwest, Weber State College (WSC) representatives:
Dr. Richard Ulibarri - Department of History
Dr. Gary Carson - Department of Psychology
Dr. Ray Clark - Department of Social Work
Dr. Dee Green - Department of Anthropology

1970-1973

State Legislature supports "Ethnic Studies Institute" being established -- Dr. Gary Carson and Dr. Richard Ulibarri - Co-Directors

1973-1975

Weber State College - Ethnic Studies formulated, Marcia Galli - Coordinator

1973-1980

Division of Student Affairs redeploys professional minority counselors to the Counseling Center as part of College Centralization Initiative, Dr. Kay Evans - Dean

1975-1980

Minority Student Coalition Formed

1975

Dr. Daily E. Oliver is appointed as Director of Ethnic Studies

1985-1986

Special Constituency Advisory Board (S.C.A.B.) Formed

1986

S.C.A.B. board submit exploratory plan for establishment of MultiCultural Center at WSC

1987-1988

Vice President Dr. Marie Kotter and Dean Toni Weight formulate administrative goal and MultiCultural Task Force

1988 - 1991

Weber State College's - MultiCultural Education Resource Center (M.E.R.C.) established Melvin Gillespie - Director

1991-1994

Weber State College becomes Weber State University (WSU) on January 1, 1991 - Louis Barraza becomes interim Director of M.E.R.C. in 1992 until December 1994 - Two other counselors were hired, one for Native American and one for African-American students.

WSU undergoes Strategic Planning initiative and restructures M.E.R.C. to become Services for MultiCultural Students (SMS) Jeffrey L. Simons - Coordinator from January 1995 to end of June 1999.  Establishes the first Multicultural Website identifying scholarships, research links, calendar of events, and important linkages to other multicultural resources.

WSU Undergoes another initiative with many of the Student Affairs Departments and changes many of the departmental names. Services foir Multicultual Students changes it's name to Multicultural Student Center in December of 2007.
