GRADUATE HIGHLIGHTS
"My IST degree kept me employed during tough economic times. Although I did not escape a layoff, I found new work in my field quickly. In the IST program, I gained specialized skills along with a broad knowledge of technology and business. This versatilty helped distinguish me from other candidates in a competitive environment.I enjoy working with databases - something I'd never done before I took Dr. Le's Database Implementation and Design course. In my career I've held positions where I focused on data integration - getting all the information into one place. I also write SQL statements and build reports. As organizations become more data driven, this is a great skill to have.
When I started at Weber State, I never imagined what path my career would take. I just knew I liked working with computers. The caring professors in the IST department broadened my horizons and gave me the tools I needed for an exciting career."
- Katy Paulson
"The IST department offered an excellent degree. As a single mother, I found the classes scheduled at times that allowed for work. The program offered the business background that the work force desires as well as the technology skills that interested me. When I completed my degree, I was able to obtain a great job."
-Sian Dagosti
"I originally chose the IS&T program because I wanted a flexible degree that would let me take advantage of any number of interesting and diverse career opportunities. The courses at WSU provided a good starting point for expanding professionally into a variety of areas in IT. I have spent most of my time working as a web developer, which has involved such tasks as designing and implementing database schemas, architecting process flows for new application features, scripting web page animations and interactivity, and mocking up graphics.
The business background has been great because it has bought me freedom and credibility in large team scenarios where non-IT staff respects my understanding of the larger business environment and the role I play within it.
I have found this field to be very dynamic and fast paced, with great job opportunities even during hard economic times. One of the concepts stressed in the IS&T program was learning to learn. Developing that ability has proved invaluable to me because acquiring and maintaining marketable technical skills is a big part of my job, and it provides a high level of engagement that ensures that I can enjoy going to work."
-Trevor Price
"After graduating from the IST program at WSU, I went to work for Iomega Corporation in Roy. There was still so much to learn about the technologies I would be using and how the company used information to run the business.
I was really surprised at how much I needed to know about general business functions, like sales, finance and operations. I am thankful I had the business courses from the IST degree to help prepare me for what I needed to know and learn in my new career.
I spend most of my days developing new tools and reports that are used by various business users. I primarily use C# and ASP.NET in Application Development, but I write a lot of Oracle PL/SQL, use a reporting tool called Business Objects, and a data transformation tool called Data Integrator. People with experience with these tools are very marketable and highly paid."
