Business Scholarships

CREDIT BUREAU OF OGDEN BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

In 1998, after 68 years of serving Northern Utah as a non-profit clearinghouse for consumer credit information, the Credit Bureau of Ogden transformed into a commercial entity. To commemorate the change, its board of directors created a $1-million scholarship endowment for students attending the John B. Goddard School of Business and Economics. This is the largest scholarship endowment in the John B. Goddard School of Business and Economics. It is designed to provide educational incentives for students who have records of achievement in the areas of business, economics, or finance; demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit, and personal integrity. Both full- and part-time students are eligible for awards.

RALPH NYE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Ralph Nye established his foundation as his legacy to the citizens of Weber County. He was a life-time resident of Ogden except for the three years spent in the Navy as a Lieutenant Senior Grade during World War II and the four years away at college--two years at Stanford and a final two years at Harvard where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature. At Harvard, he was active in school dramatic productions. Ralph was active in the management of Fred M. Nye Company in Ogden for 54 years. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and served on the Board of Trustees of Westminster College and St. Benedicts Hospital. He was chairman of the fund raising drive for St. Benedicts Hospital. He was past president of the Ogden Rotary Club. The John B. Goddard School of Business and Economics appreciates the continued financial support the Ralph Nye Foundation Scholarship affords our students.

CHARLES E. AND MARJORIE H. WARD FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

The Charles E. and Marjorie H. Ward Family Scholarship fund was established by Marjorie H. Ward in memory of her husband, Charles E. Ward. "Charlie" Ward was a very prominent businessman, banker, and entrepreneur in the Ogden area for many years. He was very active and involved in community affairs as well. Mrs. Ward is a longtime supporter of Weber State University.

ROBERT L. AND ANNETTE MARQUARDT SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL ACHIEVEMENT

Robert L. and Annette Marquardt initiated this scholarship endowment in 1996 to support students interested in entrepreneurship. The endowment provides invaluable assistance to students who aspire to the same spirit of public and private entrepreneurship that characterizes the lives of its benefactors. These scholarships provide incentive for students to study the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and lend support to students who are in the process of starting their own businesses.

Robert L. Marquardt began creating practical, productive enterprises as a youngster of 10 and continued that practice throughout his education and multi-faceted business career. His love of learning, inherited from parents who were educators themselves, was clearly demonstrated by his distinguished achievements in pursuit of higher education for himself and his untiring efforts to promote the education of unemployed youth. In partnership with Annette Marquardt, he has sparked numerous community development projects, which have benefited all northern Utahns.

ESTEL AND LEAH WRIGHT BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP

Mrs. Leah Wright grew up on a small farm east of Montpelier, Idaho. The farm's income was too small to send any of the family's eight children to college. But, thanks, in part, to the generosity of an aunt, Mrs. Wright graduated from Utah State Agricultural College. "It was very hard for me to go to school," Mrs. Wright said, "I worked and my aunt let me live with her rent-free."

Over the years, Mrs. Wright and her husband, Estel, returned the favor. With no children of their own, they sent scores of nieces and nephews to college. Many lived rent-free in their home.

Students at Weber State are beneficiaries of the Wrights' kindness. The Wrights have provided $51,800 for scholarships in an endowment fund that will benefit many future students.

GENERAL LEON C. PACKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The General Leon C. Packer Memorial Scholarship was established at Weber State College in 1987 by his family in recognition of his outstanding service to his country, to the business and civic community of the Weber-Box Elder County area, and in appreciation of the choice opportunities he experienced as a student at Weber College.

CLARENCE M. AND MYRTLE RIRIE BARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Barker family name is synonymous with the history of Weber County. Myrtle was raised in Eden, Utah while Clarence was raised in North Ogden. Myrtle rode in a wagon from her childhood home in Eden to board in Ogden to attend Weber Academy. When her younger sister was old enough to attend Weber too, the family moved to Ogden so their father could have "his daughters under one roof". Myrtle fondly remembered her days at Weber, especially her English classes taught by President David O. McKay.

The Barkers owned and operated the Quality Dairy for many years. Twelve Barker grandchildren attended Weber State, and most of them married "Weberites". Now, great grandchildren are calling Weber State University their alma mater. Myrtle Ririe Barker received the WSU Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1980. The scholarship fund began as a result of a gift from their grandson, Bernard (Barney) F. Farr.
