If so, a business degree with a human resource management emphasis may be the right choice for you.

What is human resource management?
Human resources is about people. Human resource management includes staffing, training, compensation and benefits, negotiations, employment and labor law, and organizational behavior. Human resource professionals partner with management, supervisors and employees on ways to increase workplace efficiency and carry out the company or organization's strategic goals.

What jobs are available for human resource management graduates?
Former Weber State students who studied human resource management in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics have gone on to successful careers as recruiters, training specialists, compensation and benefits administrators, payroll specialists, consultants and employment analysts.

What are the career placement opportunities?
The following companies are just a few of many who recruit Weber State University's human resource management graduates. Recent surveys indicate that starting salaries of WSU human resource management majors exceed $37,000.

  • Alliant Techsystems (ATK)
  • Barnes Aerospace
  • Hill Air Force Base
  • Huntsman Cancer Institute
  • Intermountain Healthcare

What leadership opportunities are available for students?
WSU's chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the largest and most active student chapter in Utah. Sponsored by the Northern Utah Human Resource Association, the chapter provides members with opportunities to seek internships, network with HR professionals and prepare for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) examination. WSU students have a 100 percent pass rate on the exam.

Members also participate in the SHRM Games, or HR Games, a competition that takes place annually at the state, national and regional levels. The HR Games consist of a one- or two-day series of gameshow-styled matches between teams of undergraduate students from various colleges and universities. The questions for the matches are divided into categories similar to those used in the PHR certification exam.
