2004-05 Student Affairs Progress Report

Goal One:       Create an outstanding learner-centered experience in a multi-campus environment.

 


!                                          Student Government and Student Activities developed a proposal to merge into a common operation.  This proposal was voted on and passed by the entire student body.  The new organization is called the Associated Students of Weber State University.

 

!                                          Student Activities sponsored a wide range of 224 educational and social related programs that had an overall attendance of 27,018 during  2004–2005.

 

!                                           A textbook loan program was implemented for international students.

 

!                                           Student Activities involved 780 students in leadership training opportunities on and off campus. 

 

!                                           New fitness center with a putting green opened in Promontory Tower.

 

!                                           All international student received one-on-one advisement.

 

!                                           At the Davis campus there were 2,600  tutoring sessions, 2,300 Supplemental Instruction hours, and 34,000 tests. Tutoring was expanded to Roy High.

 

!                                           Services for Students with Disabilities provided 4,410 hours of volunteer note-taking services.

 

!                                           Psychological Services held a successful depression screening event.

 

!                                           Student Affairs staff sponsored two undergraduate research projects. CPSC and the Psychology dept. joined forces with psychology students to conduct research that was presented at the WSU Undergraduate Research Symposium and at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association annual conference in Phoenix, AZ.

 

!                                          Testing Center established a new site in Morgan.

 

           

Goal Two:       Support students, faculty and the community through technology, administrative systems, outstanding service and the physical campus.


 

!                                           New computer and testing centers were opened in Lampros Hall. 

 

!                                           The Wildcard Office developed and implemented an on-line service for “Wildcat Cash” – a concept allowing student, faculty, and staff to be able to use their Wildcard as payment with vending and copy machines on campus.

 

!                                          Developed and implemented the Uniprint system tracking student printing across the campus while reducing expenses and increasing revenue.  Students added $12,000 to their Uniprint accounts for printing and there was a  41% decrease in paper used.

 

!                                           The Shepherd Union Building increased the availability of laptop computers from 12 to 30, including an extended checkout process.  A total of 8,756 laptops were checked out during the academic year.


!                                           New computer system “Titanium” was implemented in Counseling & Psychological Services Center.

 

!                                           There were 126,210 academic tests administered in the testing centers.

 

!                                           Student Senate worked with the University to help initiate on-line teacher evaluations.

 

!                                           “Putting Student Through” application and  Crystal Crest nominations and selection process was conducted on-line for the first time.

 

!                                           A new computer lab was added to Student Support Services.

 

!                                           Purchased two emergency evacuation chairs for campus buildings.  Chairs are designed to allow able bodied people evacuate disabled individuals down stairs.

 

 

Goal Three:    Develop a campus environment of support and engagement for student, faculty and staff.

 

!                                           The Hourly Childcare in Nontraditional Student Programs received accreditation from the National Association of Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

 

!                                           The Dean of Students and the Alumni Emeritus group established an emergency

                        loan program for students in extraordinary circumstances.


 

!                                           Implemented a peer recognition program for staff called “Builders of Excellence.”

 

!                                          Utilizing a committee of students, faculty and staff, the Shepherd Union Building  renovation moved ahead completing the programming phase and moving toward the design phase to take place beginning in the summer of 2005.

 

!                                           A weekly coffee break for international students was implemented.

 

!                                           To increase cultural exposure the international students took a trip to Yellowstone Park

 

!                                           Wilderness Recreation Center was relocated in Annex 9 making it more accessible. Wilderness Recreation increased participation in programs by 31%.

 

!                                          Increased intramural sports participation by 10.6%.  Last year the program had 971 individuals participate with 1,074 different participants this year.

 

!                                           10 sports clubs finished in the top 10 nationally either as a team or individually.

 

!                                            Overall G.P.A. for club sports was 3.02 for the year.

 

!                                           Opened the Promontory Tower Fitness Center fall semester with a Spinning Area, Aerobics Floor and Cardio and Single Station Exercise Machine Area.

 

!                                           Many programs were implemented for nontraditional students.  Book fair, family nights, movies, educational workshops and a fishing trip for families at the fish farm.

           

Goal Four:      Foster connections and support with/for external communities

 

!                                           Conference Services hosted the “Especially for Youth” program.  It brought 400 young people a week for 6 weeks onto campus for a total of  2400.

 

!                                            “Not so extreme make over” – A spring break activity for the students at Davis Campus.  The students renovate a home.

 

!                                           Four volunteer doctors are staffing the Davis Campus Health Center.

 

!                                           Wildcat Lanes developed and implemented a program that attracted local elementary schools to hold a bowling programs and tournaments on campus.

 

!                                          Wildcat Lanes created a community outreach program that established a bowling team at Ogden High School.

 

!                                           Services for Veteran Students proposed the plan to recruit at Department of Defense Dependents Schools.  To date six scholarships have been awarded.

 

!                                          Wildcat Lanes provided a bowling program for disabled students.

 

!                                           Student Activities hosted two volunteer fair programs that fostered connection between 35 volunteer agencies with approximately 1,965 students volunteering 17,500 hours of service.

 

!                                           Staff from Services for Students with Disabilities have presented at area high schools to assist special needs students in making educational choices and identifying transitional issues for students with disabilities.

 

!                                          Services for Multicultural Students youth conference involved students from  20 high schools. This conferences focuses on college preparation and recruitment.

 

!                                           Ten multicultural student ambassadors provide information and outreach to high school students in Weber. Ogden and Davis County.

 


Goal Five:       Enhance the campus environment through inclusion with diversity.

 


 

!                                            International Student Banquet reintroduced 400 people attended.

 

!                                           The Diversity Center held 88 events and programs which attracted nearly 4,000 in attendance throughout the academic year.

 

!                                          The Gospel Festival, sponsored in part by the Diversity Center, reached new levels of attendance.

 

!                                           Opened 11 apartments in University Village for married housing.

 

!                                          Provided interpreters for Performing Arts events, including “Secret Garden” and “Really Rosie.”
