2004-05 Information Technology Progress Report

           

The following summarizes key accomplishments of the IT Division as they relate to 2004-05 university values, goals, objectives and initiatives.

           

WSU Initiative: Enhance technology support for faculty, staff and students

           


                       Continued progress on Phase IV of the university's network plan, including work on completing the campus ring, achieving fully redundant Internet access, upgrading all switching equipment to Gigabit Ethernet, and implementing robust and secure wireless facilities.

 

                       Continued year five of Information Technology Infrastructure Project (ITIP) implementation, including the final year of Lynx/Banner implementation, installation of critical hardware and software upgrades, and conversion of major student processes (e.g., Admissions, Financial Aid, Registration) to Banner.

                       Completed the WSU Online transition from a home-grown learning management system to WebCT Vista.

                       Improved eMail system functionality and reliability with the implementation of server clustering and improved filtering.

                       Completed work on an improved user interface to the Web Content Management System and helped numerous departments conform their sites to the new protocol.

                       Continued implementation of the university's new Pinnacle Telecommunications Management System and database, with completion projected for late summer and fall 2005.

                       Made significant progress on the Mobile Internet Access Device (MIAD) project, including implementation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for GroupWise and enhanced support for BlackBerry pilot project users.

                       Continued work on the alternative desktop computing environment project with progress in both Mac user and Novell SuSe Linux support.

 

WSU Objective: Implement role-based identity management in a secure network environment

 

                                 Continued progress on role-based identity management, including implementation           of a single userID for all users (the WildCat ID or WICID).

                     Resolved Banner/Luminis/Vista integration issues.

 

 

 

WSU Objective: Continue implementation of multimedia standards in all needed WSU classrooms, meeting rooms and facilities

 


                       In 2004-05, reached 39% level of WSU Ogden classrooms meeting the standard (118 out of approximately 300 “needed”); all WSU-Davis classrooms meet the standard.

                       Completed installation of university standard multimedia facilities in the newly remodeled Betty Hess Lampros Board Room.            

 

WSU Objective: Under general supervision of the WSU Board of Trustees Audit Committee, assess and ensure the security of WSU network and computing resources, including compliance with laws applying to critical and sensitive institutional and personal data.

 

                       Completed an external consulting (LBL Technology Partners) review of network security procedures and practices.

                       Began implementation of the LBL recommendations.

                       Began the process of checking and certifying all WSU faculty, staff and lab desktop computers for compliance with university network security standards.

                       Completed multiple revisions of the draft new Acceptable Use Policy; projected approval by Board of Trustees: fall 2005.

                       Prepared and released an external consultant network configuration assessment RFP; projected award and completion: summer and fall 2005.

 

WSU Objective: Maintain a user-centered culture of excellent customer service in all support operations      

 

                       Negotiated new contracts or identified new state contracts to provide telecommunications services at lowest cost possible, including a contract for lower long distance telephone rates for all university telephone users.

 

WSU Objective: Begin measuring faculty and staff satisfaction on a regular basis         

 

                       Assisted in the completion of the biannual ARCC faculty technology survey.

                       Cooperated in the LBL Technology Partners IT staff satisfaction survey.

                       Continued monitoring and analysis of Help Desk trouble calls and work orders.

 

WSU Objective: Improve university [staff] recruitment and retention practices

 

                       Completed the IT Division portion of the WSU Human Resources process to identify and encourage staff recruiting best practices.

                       Completed training on the new WSU Human Resources Applicant Tracking System and began using it in all division searches.

 

WSU Objective: Encourage professional growth opportunities for employees

 

                       Initiated program of ensuring that every IT Division employee participates in at least one significant professional development/training event per year.

                       Initiated program of ensuring that all professionals in the division have the appropriate certification, when available and appropriate, for their specific job responsibilities.

 

WSU Objective: Identify assessment initiatives and link to planning processes; identify university performance-based measures        

 

                       Incorporated university assessment initiatives into the WSU IT Plan.

                       Initiated process of identifying performance-based measures for all IT Division goals and objectives.

 

WSU Initiative: Enhance Institutional culture by encouraging, recognizing and supporting diversity    

 

                       Reconstituted the IT Division Diversity Action Team, including additional representatives and a new co-chair.
