There should be a Graduate Office with a Dean of Graduate Studies to coordinate masters programs, including admissions, training for instructors and consistency of processes across programs.  Such an office would be helpful to individual departments who are currently managing all these processes.

Online programs need better supervision and control, including monitoring the number of students instructors deal with, issues of overload teaching hours, assessing how faculty are actually keeping in contact with students.

Leave behind the community college role.

More funding for research.

Become a regional leader in international studies, international relations and international business.

Put more resources into making WSU a world-class teaching institution and implement cutting edge/state of the art technology to facilitate that goal.

Create a nationally recognized service learning organization that not only provides community-based programs, but is also known for its international projects.

Create a university that is recognized locally for placing students in internships with concurrent courses that increase research and writing skills.

Any changes of emphasis that we affect will, by necessity, increase or decrease the emphasis in any given other area.  For example, more emphasis on research decreases emphasis on teaching.

I believe it’s more important than ever to serve part-time students.  I have been associated with a number of them and I know how important their education is to them – and how well they do – in spite of the fact that circumstances do not allow them to study full time.

Enlarge the Ogden campus by acquiring strategic property during the next 20 years.

Fulfill community college role, but also expand graduate programs.

I would like to see WSU become a strong model for the larger community – beyond close political and geographic boundaries – that emphasize critical thinking and strong, accurate evidence behind dialogue among diverse points of view. I hope WSU will be a model not only of academic excellence but also of ethical consideration and behavior as it affects all kinds of life and the Earth’s resources. I hope WSU will be integrated extensively into the larger community as a trusted and friendly resource for the above.

Weber should remain a community university, but extend recruitment regionally.

Research should be more integrated, but should be about 1/3 of the university’s focus.

Community partnerships should be more important, especially within the two-year vocational programs.

Recruitment of more students from diverse backgrounds in the community – Ogden, SLC, Davis County, etc.

We must “solve” the parking problem.

We need to make it very difficult to shift costs to students through student fee increases.

We should have more full-time faculty and fewer adjuncts.

We need to control the explosive growth of staff.

More of our diversity should come from our traditional service area.

We need a new Recreation Facility for Campus Recreation apart from academics.

Buy McKay Dee property across the street from WSU.

A comprehensive university known for great teaching with opportunities abounding for students.  A service oriented campus where students feel at home and learn and prepare for their careers and graduate school.  A division I football team in the WAC conference.

Reaching out to the needs of the community.

I would like to see our university expand the number of opportunities in Master Degree offerings and increase the number of “traditional” students on campus.

More majors

Strong connection with local businesses, especially manufacturing which continues to grow.

WSU becomes an innovative leader in connecting with the Hispanic community and becomes a model for other universities in this area.

Open more to other faiths – possible non-denominational Christian Center and Programs.

Creation of the same dynamics that the Mormon Seminary creates for Mormons.

Global view – reaching out to community and other countries.

Focus more on quality of services and teaching.

Seek cultural competency and an environment of inclusion

Possible development of land and physical property.

Create an environment of inclusion through openness to disparities of all people – and to gear its effects to meet the needs of those potential students.

Support a gondola on campus attached to ski area (only in U.S.)

Create an outdoor recreation management degree

Ski/Snowboard Mountaineering classes taught minutes away in Malan’s Basin

Acquire nearby property

Reduce the number of adjunct faculty and hire more full time faculty

Increase resources for technology purchases and advancements

Increase salaries to be competitive with other state and regional universities.

Encourage internal promotions to utilize our talent and increase retention

Manage our healthcare costs more effectively to slow our premium increases

Replace old buildings 1, 2, 3, and 4 and upgrade the landscaping to be the most beautiful campus in the West.

Buy additional property for Weber State’s Ogden Campus to expand.

Build 5 new buildings on Davis Campus

Attract more students from Hill Field. Stronger articulation of courses.

Definitely student centered, still community focused, moving toward more research based and graduate school oriented with a high focus on meeting the needs of the ever increasing minority populations!

More parking

Commuter rail system

On-campus medical facility

More masters programs

At least 5 Ph.D. programs

Ethnic diversity represented in Board of Trustees

More graduate programs

Shed the small town college reputation

Student friendly environment

Should pursue greater online course market

Expand community research and development

Let’s make WSU the state leader in technology – integrated “hybrid course” higher education!

Attract and retain quality faculty.  Pay them competitively.

Remember to get good teaching and researching faculty.

Look at population needs. i.e. 65 age and beyond. What are the gerontology training options that are available?

Create a way for students to belong to clubs, teams, fraternities and sororities, either as  participants or observers.  Support club sports.

A university that immediately springs to mind for all Utah students and even more regional and national students.

A university where students know their degree really means something and students know they are going to have to work hard in challenging classes to earn their degree.

A university with quality resources – buildings, technology, research finds, travel money, etc.

A university where I feel more like a college professor and not a high school teacher.

Utah is a growing state and will continue to grow with minorities.  I hope Weber will be more understanding and target our growing diverse community as years pass.

I believe Weber State should expand its recruitment to those outside the local student body and create more masters programs to continue strong faculty/student partnerships and research begun in undergraduate academic careers.

All faculty have a minimum of 5 years industrial experience to stay connected and relevant to local industry

More automated student support (less support personnel)

Faculty are given time to do research

I believe WSU needs to retain its community college status, but also increase research and attract a more diverse student body

Consolidated classes for quicker completion

Greatly improved online courses

Expanded online courses

Responsive to needs of students – willing to let go of traditional approaches to education and student life

Class schedules and administrative hours conducive to the challenging schedule of working students

Continued growth of satellite locations

“Leaner” with less administrative overhead and smaller student government (decreased activities, change in focus, lowered student fees)

Continue to strive for improvement in:

1.                 International students population

2.                 Community funding/involvement

3.                 Greater growth at satellite campuses

4.                 Better benefits and salary to match region wide colleges and universities, which would foster more intense effort to build the number of students attending WSU

Many more international students

Many more out of state students

More equitable salaries for faculty

More equitable salaries for staff

Multi-level buildings with skylights and bistros.  Seriously

More student gathering areas in addition to the union building

Research required for tenured faculty

Grant writing workshop required for student affairs staff

Increased externally-funded grant pursuits to offset decreases in state funding and avoid continual tuition increases

Increased comfort with and explicit attention to “controversial” diversity issues such as religion and race, gender and sexuality

Attempts to bring salaries across campus more in line with statewide and regional peer universities

Actively pursue and continue to keep students of color once they are here

Add more graduate degrees and maybe Ph.D.’s as well in Education, etc.

Add more child care facilities

1.                 Change non-resident status so that one year (vice two years) and/or so that 30 credit hours (vice 60 credit hours) can qualify as resident status. (like it used to be)

2.                 Offer doctorate programs from WSU (in fields we now offer masters programs)

3.                 Grow the Davis Campus faster – more graduate programs

4.                 Embrace the Lift Ogden Proposal – put WSU on the international map – make Ogden a destination (attract Salt Lakers back to Ogden) (attract the whole world to WSU!)

1.                 Renowned for enthusiastic and innovative staff and faculty

2.                 An environment in which intellectual debate in a civilized manner is encouraged and practiced

3.                 WSU puts effort to develop a “think tank” to explore, develop a program, and implement a role in international assistance, i.e. providing education, agricultural, business, etc.  In this manner our students will become aware of their significance in shaping the global socio-economic-political climate fo the world in which they live.

Short term:

Fix problems with support organizations.  Service from these organizations are becoming non-existent

We are especially gaining a reputation of being student unfriendly!

Industry funding must be a high priority, either through donations or grants in order for Weber to achieve their funding needs

Education must have a higher focus on providing practical education for the non-traditional student to support student show are returning to school to advance their careers and support students who can’t go to school full-time

The support functions of the university, accounting, registration, etc., need to be more service oriented toward faculty and less bureaucratic

Weber needs to identify its consumers, then address their needs.

High quality undergraduate education for a largely commuting student population.

Expand role of research

Expand graduate programs

Continue teaching excellence

Change the Math Department to be more student friendly and supportive of students – help the Math faculty understand who they serve

A way to reduce international student fees, maybe through more scholarships, work study, etc.

No gondola!!

Better transition from ESL classes to beginning level coursework

Benefits for nontraditional students (with children, older, special needs or medical requirements) to assist with rising costs of education besides financial aid
