Deborah Judd, MSN, FNP-C has received The Faculty Spotlight (2010) for her contributions and commitment to the Weber State University School of Nursing. Professor Judd has participated in new course development in the baccalaureate nursing program through establishment of the first Oncology course in Utah at the BSN level, redesign of the Policy, Power, and Politics in Nursing course, creation of a custom textbook for the Policy, Power, and Politics in Nursing students, and co-authored a text book for the Nursing History and Theory class. vspace=10The textbook, A History of American Nursing: Trends and Eras, was published in March 2009 and shortly thereafter received The American Journal of Nursing 2009 Book of the Year Award. The textbook, a joint effort with Kathleen Sitzman, PhD, RN, was created to fill a gap in existing textbooks for the BSN student as it presented history from a different perspective than previously utilized.

The Policy, Power, and Politics in Nursing course now includes a professionalism component and actual interactions with policy makers in order for advancing nursing students to understand how policy and nursing are inter-related. Oncology students are exposed to a variety of new ideas which enable best practices as they care for those who are living with cancer; most nurses will encounter cancer patients in almost any setting.

Professor Judd is the chair of the WSU School of Nursing Faculty Organization, participates in university/college/department committees, has been a Board member of UNA since 2005, participates in government relations for nurses in the state, and has presented multiple national seminars on development of a model NP clinic and EBP care of asthma/COPD. Deborah is currently working on a DNP at the University of Alabama.

Karen Burton, MS, RN was one of two faculty members in the Dumke College of Health Professions awarded Teacher of the Year at the Spring 2010 convocation. Teacher of the Year award is granted to faculty who have demonstrated exemplary teaching abilities. They are nominated by faculty, staff and students. Professor Burton was nominated by her students who had the following comments:

"My first experience with Karen was in Nursing History and Theory. When I saw the title of the class I was immediately turned off to the fact that I may find myself not interested and that I would probably be leaving that class wondering why I wasted my time ( I hate theory and history). I loved that class in the end and it was all due to Karen and her ability to keep the information and material presented in the class interesting."

“I really learned a lot about who I am and who I choose to be because of the though provoking activities. Karen Burton has a special way of teaching new concepts. She has passion for teaching and she stimulates our thought process and challenges us to think outside the box. Her teaching method keeps my attention and makes me want more.”

"Karen is one of the reasons I'm planning on getting my Master of Nursing in Education, because of her qualities as a positive mentor and a role model.”

Congratulations to Professor Burton.
