The nursing program at any level is a learning-intensive, time-consuming enterprise. You will be required to complete course work, clinical work, skills testing, theory testing, nursing care plans and more.
The School of Nursing strongly recommends that you work no more than 24 hours a week during the course of the program. If your family and home commitments are high, we recommend you curtail outside employment even further.
Following are the required courses for the nursing program. Non-nursing courses are available to all WSU students. In order to enroll in the nursing courses, you must have applied and been accepted to a specific nursing program.
All non-nursing courses must be completed at a C level or higher. Grades of C- or lower will not be accepted toward graduation completion.
Prerequisite Courses
Prerequisite courses must be passed with a C grade or higher. All accepted students (including high school graduates) must complete the science option I or II by the end of summer semester prior to starting the nursing program.
To receive college science/support course/general education GPA credit for the application process, you must complete 12 credit hours in the prerequisite/support course area.
Science
Option I
HTHS 1110/1111 Biomedical Core with Lab (8 credits)
CHEM 1050 Intro to General, Organic and Biochemistry (5 credits)**
MATH Quantitative Literacy Requirement (3/4 credits), see Advisor
Option II
ZOOL 2100 Human Anatomy (4 credits)
ZOOL 2200 Human Physiology (4 credits)
CHEM 1050 Intro to General, Organic and Biochemistry (5 credits)**
MATH Quantitative Literacy Requirement (3/4 credits), see Advisor
**CHEMISTRY NOTE: For applicants attending a college or university where Chemistry 1050 is not available, take CHEM 1110 Elementary Chemistry (5 cr.) If you plan to advance to higher-level nursing programs, you should complete CHEM 1110. In addition, some graduate nursing programs require two sections of Chemistry; therefore, Chemistry 1110 and Chemistry 1120 would be a best choice. Talk with an academic advisor.

MICR 1113 Introductory Microbiology (3 credits)
NUTR 1020 Foundations in Nutrition (3 credits)

The nursing program has established guidelines if you are planning to take Independent Study or Distance Learning course. Failure to comply with the following guidelines will disqualify you from starting or progressing in the program:
- Prerequisite courses must be completed with grades posted one week prior to starting the nursing program.
- Nursing deadlines override all Continuing Education and Distance Learning guidelines.
